Numerous works of art and literature make references to this breed, but they do not officially appear until the 1500s. It was an all around family dog for German citizens of all classes. They could dispatch vermin during the day, warm their owner’s lap in the evening, and entertain at night. The original version of this breed came in various sizes. It was not officially named Affenpinscher until its appearance was refined by cross-breeding with Pugs and German Pinschers. It shares a resemblance to the Brussels Griffon, because it happens to be the breed’s forefather. Naturally, the Affenpinscher was quite popular in Germany. But the country’s bad reputation during World War II prevented the breed’s rise in popularity. After the war, the breed’s numbers dropped even in Germany. Today, the Affenpinscher is rare worldwide.

Though it possesses a unique look, the Affenpinscher contains a classic Terrier personality. It is a stubborn little busybody as well as a super-affectionate, loving companion. It loves to clown around and play all day, especially if it is in the company of its owner. Training is relatively easy, as long as its owner is not expecting an obedience champion. The best training method for this breed is to integrate play time. The Affenpinscher will learn quickly if it is unaware it is learning.
