Airedale Terrier Overview

The Airedale is the tallest of all the Terrier breeds, as they were an upgrade from ratters to fox hunters. A keener hunter than other Terriers, the Airedale still retains the usual fire and rebellion the family is famous for. 

More versatile than its Terrier brethren, it is more apt to listen and obey its master. However, this version of Terrier also has higher upkeep requirements, for its athletic disposition makes for higher exercise requirements. 

Grooming is necessary, for its thick and wiry coat tends to clump up if not brushed regularly. Furthermore, its floppy ears are prone to infection, so regular cleaning is necessary. 

If it is true that there is a Terrier breed for any owner, then the Airedale is certainly for the active handler.

Airedale Terrier History

Airedale Terriers were bred for hunting a variety of game from rats to foxes, and they were also skilled retrievers. In order to improve their hunting abilities in water, these Terriers were bred with Otterhounds of the region. 

In 1878, these “Waterside Terriers” received the official name “Airedale” for their fames otter-hunting abilities near the River Aire. The Otterhound genes were eventually bred out of the dog for the sake of desirable looks, and by the beginning of the 20^th century, Airedales were earning kudos as working Terriers. 

Airedales become well known in World War I, where they were used as guards and police dogs. Today the Airedale Terrier is not as popular, but a legendary reputation precedes it. 

Airedale Terrier Character

Unlike other Terrier breeds, particularly the ever-independent Scottie, the Airedale is more likely to receive training and please its owner. But even so, a prospective owner should look elsewhere if they are searching for an obedience champion. 

A very active breed, the Airedale needs daily exercise and training to keep from being bored. This is a breed that prefers itself over children, so the best way for the dog to live with children is if it feels higher up on the food chain. It can exhibit highly dominant behavior around others even if properly socialized. Thankfully, however, the Airedale is less stubborn than other Terriers, so its social problems can be managed.

Airedale Terriers are a very lively and headstrong breed. If trained properly, it can be more manageable than other Terriers, but they still have a fiery personality that some may find off-putting.

Airedale Terrier Care

The hair of this breed is hard and crisp making it rather hard to groom. Dead hair should be plucked at least twice a year. The Airedale Terrier can shed heavily or not at all depending on the cut of the coat. Washing the beard regularly is a must to keep it free from caking.

Airedale Terrier Training

This breed can be very willful and stubborn at times, but with variety can do very well in sporting events. This dog is very lively and requires an experienced handler. Firm but gentle training is required.
