Alaskan Malamute Overview

One of the hardiest dogs to ever grace this world, the Alaskan Malamute is sturdy in both mind and body, which is both good and bad. Powerfully muscular, this breed was build for strength rather than speed, able to pull fully-loaded sleds across the icy tundra. 

But this breed is also strong willed, causing it to be stubborn and independent. 

Coat upkeep can be a chore, and it can easily bury the house in a thin layer of fur when shedding. Some owners believe it is a good idea to cut the dog’s hair or even shave it during the hot summer months. This is a bad idea for a multitude of reasons. Most importantly, the Malamute’s coat exists for the purpose of weatherproofing, not just cold resistance. If the dog’s hair is shaved down, its resistance to both heat and cold will be neutralized, and it will be prone to overheating and sunburns. It is not recommended that this dog live in a hot climate regardless of coat care. 

The Alaskan Malamute is a hard-headed companion that can be highly gentle and affectionate, as long as its owner can give the affection it deserves.

Alaskan Malamute History

As the name implies, Alaskan Malamutes originated in Alaska, far north in the barren arctic regions. While there is no official date of origin, they were first discovered among the native Inuit tribes. 

The breed’s name comes from a combination of the Inuit words “Mahle,” which regards a particular Inuit tribe name, and “Mut,” which translates to village. It is reported that these dogs were so powerful, they aided in the hunting of polar bears, and they could pull a sled with the same strength as other, multiple dogs. 

During the Alaskan gold rush of the late 19^th century, weight-pulling competitions were held as entertainment in mining towns. Because the authentic Malamute invariably won these competitions, they were interbred with other, faster dogs in an attempt to create an ideal racer. 

Thankfully, a group of New England dog enthusiasts intervened to preserve the original Malamute breed. Were it not for them, it would have been bred out of existence. Popularity of the dog grew, as it was frequently used in arctic expeditions and as a search-and-rescue dog during World War II. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1935.

Alaskan Malamute Character

The Alaskan Malamute has a tendency towards stubbornness. Training can be challenging for novice owners, but as a working dog it can still excel in obedience if trained appropriately. 

While it is not recommended that this dog live in an apartment, it is still possible. This breed is surprisingly well-mannered as long as it isn’t bored or under-exercised. Malamutes are powerful animals, and if left on their own they can destroy a household with ease. 

While not an entirely athletic breed, this dog still needs regular exercise to be healthy and satisfied. 

Malamutes are typically very gentle and patient with children, making them ideal family dogs. But if not socialized properly, these dogs can be aggressive and will sometimes nip at strangers. In the case of other animals, this breed is more likely to shoot first and ask questions later when confronted by a stranger. Males like to be domineering. 

Alaskan Malamutes are best suited as family companions, particularly families with children, where they can run and play while simultaneously feeling protective.

Alaskan Malamute Care

The Alaskan Malamute has a very thick and coarse coat and would do well with a good brushing twice a week. They are very heavy shedders and there undercoat comes out in clumps twice a year. Bathes for this breed really aren't necessary as they easily shed dirt. Also as an energetic working dog they do best with some space to run or a walk at least twice a day.

Bred for sledding and independence the Alaskan Malamute can prove to be stubborn. Don't let the stubbornness fool you though because they are highly intelligent!
