The original was interbred with Keeshonds and Pomeranians, creating a dog with all manner of coat colors. When the breed arrived in the U.S. in the early 1900s, the Eskie had no place in the show ring. It was regarded by some as a white Keeshond, which was undesirable. Others saw it as a Pomeranian that exceeded the weight limit. The breed fell into obscurity, used primarily as farm dogs.
