One of the more serious dog breeds, the Anatolian Shepherd is laid back and dignified. It has low energy and exercise requirements for a working breed, needing only a long daily walk to stay healthy. Resistant to both hot and cold climates, this is a very adaptable breed. Grooming is also a low requirement, needing to be brushed once per week to remove dead hair. Originally bred as a guard dog, the Anatolian Shepherd focuses on power rather than speed. They are not built for chasing down intruders. Instead, they stand their ground and protect anything that attempts to pass. Consideration should be given to the dog’s size. Adults weigh between 80 to 150 lbs. It is a manageable, low-maintenance breed, but it is simply too large for some homes. The Anatolian Shepherd is a confident, serious, and respectable breed; best suited for single owners that complement its refined personality.
Anatolian Shepherd History
Originating in ancient Turkey, the purpose of the Anatolian Shepherd was to protect livestock against highly dangerous predators such as bears and wolves. It is safely assumed that the breed came from a combination of Mastiffs and Roman war dogs thousands of years ago. Belonging to nomadic shepherds, the breed expanded throughout Europe. Its formidable stature and unmoving personality earned the respect of prospective owners, and they were adopted to guard temples, farms, and homes. The breed changed very little in spite of its geographic expansion, because fanciers strove to preserve the dog’s rugged loyalty. It arrived in the U.S. in the 1950s because of its reputation as an effective guard against predators. But its popularity never skyrocketed like other dogs. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1996. Though never reaching widespread fame, the Anatolian Shepherd is respected by a minority of enthusiasts who appreciate its willpower and sense of dignity.
While affectionate and devoted, the Anatolian Shepherd has standards of behavior. They run and play like any other dog, but there is a purposeful dignity about them. Where a Labrador Retriever would flail around in boisterous play sessions, the Anatolian Shepherd prefers structure and rules for its games. Training is relatively easy, as this dog prefers to go with the flow. It is gentle and patient around children, but it is also too laid back to make an ideal playmate. Naturally suspicious of strangers, it may exhibit aggressive behavior. It takes some time for this breed to warm up to frequent visitors. It tends to be territorial, barking at possible intruders. As a companion, the Anatolian Shepherd is well-suited for single owners rather than entire families. This breed is a proud sentinel, preferring respect over affection.
The Anatolian Shepherd requires brushing once a week with special attention given to the coat during the heavy seasonal shedding. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary. This breed is highly susceptible to fleas, ticks, and fly bites. They may also be prone to hip dysplasia, eyelid entropion, sensitivity to anesthesia, and hypothyroidism.
This breed must have early socialization and basic obedience training. They will not respond to harshness or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with respect, firmness, fairness, patience, consistency, and love. The Anatolian Shepherd requires a dominant owner.
