Australian Cattle Dog Overview

This brilliant member of the herding group is one of the most talented in its class. The Australian Cattle Dog is the product of years of specialized breeding, dating back to the first colonization of Australia. 

This is a dog that was born to work, always ready to utilize its seemingly infinite energy reserves to perform any duty. Moderate grooming requirements are expected, as the dog is meant for hard labor and little else. 

The deal-breaker for this breed is its massive exercise requirement, too high for even multiple daily walks. Furthermore, mental challenges are a necessity to stave off boredom, which is most certainly not a state for this dog to be in. If not given enough work, it will find things to do on its own, regardless of whether it is behaving or not. 

The ideal home for an Australian Cattle Dog is a farm or ranch, with plenty of room to roam and jobs to do.

Australian Cattle Dog History

As the British colonized Australia and unlocked the vast region for farming, the environmental conditions presented a new challenge for herders and their conventional British breeds. Numerous herders could not withstand the wide landscape and boiling temperatures, so they needed a new type of dog that was best suited for the job. 

The particular cattle there only became wilder and uncontrollable with loud noises, so a breed was needed that could herd without barking. Also, this new dog needed to be able to travel long distances in hot weather. 

The foundation of the breed, a stud named Bentley’s Dog, was an unlikely mix between Highland Collies and Dingos, the native wild dogs of Australia. The breed was then furthered with the addition of the Dalmatian, and it eventually became known as the Queensland Blue Heeler, credited for its usefulness in the Queensland region. 

An official standard of the breed was created at the end of the 19^th century. Although the Australian Cattle Dog never received widespread support in the U.S., it is immortalized on a stamp in Australia.

Australian Cattle Dog Character

The most popular media image of this dog comes from its appearance in the Australian film “Mad Max,” where it stood alongside the renegade titular character. Its place in the film, companion to the roguish antihero whom is ever vigilant, is a perfect representation of the dog itself. It is smart, durable, and affectionate. 

But it is also hard-headed, demanding, and independent. The breed is not suited for any owner with an allergy towards exercise, and it is even likely to wear out children in play. In regard to children, a Cattle Dog will find great fun in trying to herd them; nipping at heels as though they are any other animal. Socialization and training can break them of this habit. 

If there is one thing owners should look out for, it is the breed’s tendency towards boredom. This is a dog that needs constant mental and physical activity, and it will become highly destructive in a desperate attempt to entertain itself. Training should be coupled with exercise, for the Cattle Dog benefits greatly from mental stimulation.

The Australian Cattle Dog needs weekly brushing with a firm bristle brush. Extra attention should be given to the coat during seasonal shedding. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo. This breed is prone to such health issues as PRA, deafness, and hip dysplasia.

Australian Cattle Dog Training

Early intense socialization and obedience are crucial for the Australian Cattle Dog. This breed is extremely obedient. Australian Cattle Dogs do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, praise, consistency, and patience. They are very talented in such areas as herding, agility, retrieving, guarding, competitive obedience, and in learning tricks.
