Australian Shepherd Overview

Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd, or "Aussie," ironically originated in the U.S. Sharing many similarities with the Border Collie, this is a rougher, tougher version. It is recommended that an experienced handler owns this breed, for it can be aggressive and bossy if left to follow its instincts. 

Although shaggy looking, the Australian Shepherd does not require extensive grooming, but shedding may be a problem for those with allergies. 

This working dog can only be truly happy if given some sort of job. The Australian Shepherd is an excellent dog if it has plenty of room to exercise and if the owner is experienced.

Australian Shepherd History

It is commonly assumed that the predecessors of the Australian Shepherd came from the same region as the Pyrenees, and that its ancestors came to the U.S. from Spain in the early 20^th century. With the huge agricultural regions of the U.S., the Shepherd’s versatility made it instantly popular, being utilized in virtually every aspect of rural life including rodeos. It was not until after years of specialized breeding did the Aussie arrive in Australia for the same purpose as in the States. The breed is seen regularly on television, for it is a very adaptable dog. It was recognized by the AKC in 1993.

Australian Shepherd Character

This dog needs a big backyard to vent its excess energy. If given a home in the city, the owner might as well quit their job to spend all day walking around the block with a leashed Shepherd. If given enough mental stimulation and exercise, however, this dog can be very loyal and protective over their family. 

But if left alone too long, this breed is prone to separation anxiety, leading it to be loud and destructive. Also, its rugged build and playful nature make it too dangerous to play with small toddlers. 

While going out for walks, it is ideal for this dog to be leashed. It has a strong chasing instinct that will cause it to chase after strange animals. If socialized at a young age, however, this dog can be very friendly with other animals. 

This highly intelligent dog needs to be convinced that education is important, and it needs to know why their owner’s orders are worth obeying. 

The Australian Shepherd is great for an energetic owner that has plenty of time and attention to give.

Australian Shepherd Care

The Australian Shepherd requires minimal grooming. An occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush will suffice. It is important to do more in depth grooming when they are going through their seasonal shedding. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary. The Aussie is susceptible to a myriad of health issues and concerns. Their merle coloration carries a blind/deaf factor. Natural bobtails may have

serious spinal defects. They are also prone to epilepsy, hip dysplasia, and cataracts.

Australian Shepherd Training

Australian Shepherds are easy to train. They benefit from early socialization and very basic obedience. It is important that they know who the master is or they will attempt to take control. The Australian Shepherd requires firm, fair, consistent, and effective direction. Their high intelligence and keen learning ability make repetitive training boring.
