Basenji Overview

This obscure African dog is more often compared to a Terrier than a Hound. They are reserved, independent, and highly intelligent dogs. The Basenji is high in energy and low on patience. 

This is a dog that needs physical exercise and mental stimulation on a daily basis, so any adventurous owner should give this dog a try. Its ideal home is one with a large plot of land, such as a farm or ranch, but only if the area is well-fenced. Basenjis like to entertain themselves by solving problems, such as how to get over a high wall. 

Strangely, this breed does not bark. Instead, they make yelping sounds similar to a fox. But bark or yelp, they are typically quiet dogs. 

Low grooming requirements can be a plus to some owners, needing to be brushed intermittently to remove dead hair. The Basenji is not the right dog for everyone, particularly because it is relatively rare and casual owners see little need to go out of their way for a potentially frustrating dog. But in the care of an energetic and disciplined owner, the Basenji can thrive to be an excellent companion.

Basenji History

Dating back to pre-history, the Basenji was first discovered assisting hunting tribes in the African Congo. Virtually no records exist that detail the dog’s genesis, but their close relationships with African tribes suggest centuries of assistance. 

Early explorers gave this dog many names, as they named the breeds after the tribes that used them. The purpose of the dog was to chase its quarry into nets for the tribesman to finish off, and it worked splendidly. 

Impressing their European visitors, the dog was brought to England in the late 19^th century. Unfortunately, the breed did not adapt well, and most of them fell to distemper. But in the 1930s, the dog finally established itself in England, earning the official name Basenji, which stands for “bush thing.” 

Popularity of the breed rose slowly as it entered the show ring, but it received a massive boost in the 1950s. In 1955, the book “Goodbye My Lady” was adapted into a film produced by John Wayne. This was the first film to show a Basenji, and the breed’s rise in popularity coincided with the film’s success. 

In the 1980s, the breed received a large change when African Basenjis were imported in an attempt to breed out some hereditary health problems. The result was the brindle color we recognize today. 

The Basenji has had a history of trouble in the show ring, as judges have been hesitant to place the breed in a particular category.

Basenji Character

Basenjis have character traits that are uncommon for hounds. They are fiery, independent, and prefer to do things their way. Some consider them to be more like Terriers, which many will consider to be a charming characteristic. 

This breed likes to climb and jump, never afraid to burn excess energy in creative ways. It is a clever problem-solver, which is ideal for owners interested in a dog that can teach itself. Not ideal around small pets, the Basenji regularly channels its hunting instinct to chase and track other animals. 

While not the friendliest of the bunch, this breed is behaved around other dogs. But around other Basenjis, they may scuffle over dominance issues. This is a fearless breed, which begs for the use of a collar in any unfenced place. Not even passing cars can frighten this dog, which puts them at risk. 

The Basenji is an intelligent and unique dog for any owner in search of the exotic. With proper training and socialization, this dog makes an excellent companion.

Basenji Care

The Basenji is much like a cat being very clean and grooming himself on occasion. This is a little to no shedding breed, however does require some grooming if the coat is to stay in good shape. An occasional brushing with a firm bristle or wire brush works best to remove dead or loose hair from the coat. The smooth coat of the Basenji is very easy to care for.

Basenji Training

The Basenji should be socialized early to prevent any destruction problems if he is to be home raised, and to ensure that he will do well around children and other animals. Obedience training is a must for this energetic and very alert breed. This breed should have a variety of training methods to keep his attention, as he tends to bore quickly. Variety, consistency, and firm handling work best with the Basenji.
