Bedlington Terrier Overview

The unique-looking Bedlington Terrier is one of the more genial terrier breeds. It is well-proportioned and graceful, with manageable exercise needs. A daily walk or a vigorous game is all that is needed to keep this dog in shape. While it is still bold and adventurous, it is also more mellow and eager to please. The difficulty with this breed is its high grooming requirements. Its distinctive coat means distinctive and meticulous care, so prospective owners should be mindful. The coat needs to be trimmed and stripped at least twice weekly, and it needs to be shaped every three months. Floppy ears are prone to infection, and its thick fur retains hair that was already shed. If prospective owners are looking for an eye-catching breed and don’t mind high grooming needs, the Bedlington Terrier is an excellent choice.

Bedlington Terrier History

The Bedlington Terrier’s history begins in the Northumberland region of England. There, the Rothbury Terrier had a great reputation for hunting small game. In 1825, enthusiast Joseph Ainsley of Bedlington acquired a new type of breed from his two Rothbury Terriers. These offspring were no different from their ancestors, but were given a different name as a symbol of pride. They were interbred with faster dogs, like Whippets, and their coats were reinforced from other terriers. Eventually, the Bedlington Terrier as we know it today was born, and it quickly became popular on account of its unique look and its ability to hunt virtually any small game. Naturally, its graceful and peculiar appearance caught the attention of the wealthy. The breed first appeared in show rings in the late 17th century. Little has changed with the breed since, though its popularity declined due to difficult grooming requirements that were undesirable in the show ring. Today, the Bedlington Terrier spends more time in the homes of dog lovers than in the show ring.

Bedlington Terrier Character

More mellow than other terriers, the Bedlington offers a softer and more reliable personality. It still retains the fiery nature that terriers share, but it is more willing to concede and compromise. Training can still be tricky, as this breed prefers play over work. It is tolerant of other animals if socialized properly. In the company of strange guests, this dog is reserved but friendly. The Bedlington will rarely pick a fight with other dogs, but it will certainly fight back if pushed into a corner. It may not be the best companion for small children because it does not take kindly to teasing and roughhousing. It is still a friendly dog, though, and families should not overlook the possibility of owning one. The Bedlington Terrier is an alert and active watchdog, always willing to please and protect its family.

Bedlington Terrier Care

This is a high maintenance breed. They require professional specialized clipping every six weeks. They must be brushed and combed on a daily basis. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary. The Bedlington Terrier is prone to a serious inherited liver problem known as Copper Storage Disease. They also have a tendency for such health issues as thyroid problems, cataracts, and kidney disease.

Bedlington Terrier Training

The Bedlington Terrier can be independent, skittish, and quite difficult to train. They benefit from early socialization, particularly with cats and other pets. Intensive obedience training is crucial as this breed has a tendency to be destructive and bark excessively. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training. The Bedlington Terrier thrives on human companionship and is trained best with firm, loving and consistent guidance. They excel in agility, obedience, and flyball.
