Aside from color and weight variations, the Belgian Tervuren shares many characteristics with the Belgian Sheepdog. It is an alert and intelligent working dog that loves to please. Exercise requirements are very high. With an equally high energy level, the Tervuren is only an ideal pet as long as it can burn off excess energy; needing vigorous play sessions, long walks, or most preferably – a chance to herd every day. But they also require the company of their owners, always wanting to be included in family activities. It is definitely not suited for apartment life, unless its owner can devote a few hours to exercise each day. Grooming is also a moderate necessity, but not a chore. Its long coat needs multiple weekly brushings, and it goes through shedding periods. The Belgian Tervuren is a relatively high-maintenance breed. If its owner can devote the necessary time to it, however, it is a brilliant and beautiful dog.
Belgian Tervuren History
One of three primary Belgian breeds, the Belgian Tervuren is itself split into four distinct types: the Laekenois, which has a wire coat; the Groenendael, which has a black coat; the Malinois, with a short coat; and the Tervuren, which can have any coat except black. Though not recognized until the late 1800s, this breed existed and was interbred years before it was revealed to the world. It was, and always has been, an accomplished herder. The Tervuren was less popular than its brethren, likely because it was less glitzy and more rugged in appearance. The original Tervuren was adopted in the U.S. by 1918, but went extinct during the Great Depression. The breed we recognize today is actually a recreation, interbred from other Malinois after World War II. Today, ironically, it is considered the most beautiful of the three Belgian herding breeds. It is moderately popular worldwide, commonly used on farms and in competitions.
The high point of the Belgian Tervuren is its ability to be trained. This brainiac is very eager to please, and it always prefers to be intellectually challenged as well as physically. Ideally suited for farm or ranch living, where it can work all day, this breed is as behaved and smart as the owner wants it to be. If under-stimulated, however, the Tervuren may become destructive or noisy just to keep busy. It is essential to keep this dog sufficiently stimulated to ensure a harmonious home. If socialized at a young age, this dog will behave itself around other animals and dogs. But they are reserved around strange people, always protective of their owner. It is gentle and affectionate with children, but it tends to nip at heels while playing. The Belgian Tervuren is a dog that needs to spend the day working, then come home and rest when the sun goes down. For this breed, there are demands that need to be met before it can become a memorable pet.
The Belgian Tervuren requires daily brushing and combing to prevent tangles and mats. Bathing should be done once a month using a mild shampoo. They can be dry shampooed as necessary. Belgian Tervurens are prone to epilepsy, hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, aggressiveness, and shyness.
This breed requires extensive and intensive socialization at an early age. They have an inordinate amount of energy and thrive on having something to do. They excel in working and competitive obedience, as well as police and guard work. The Belgian Tervuren will become uncooperative to harsh or overbearing training methods. They must be trained with firmness, fairness, respect, and consistency.
