Bichon Frise Overview

The Bichon Frise is a playful, extroverted dog that loves people. It is a sturdy dog that can take long hikes and exercise as well as any other. The dog is neither stingy nor discriminating, for its only desire is to have attention lavished upon it so it may reciprocate accordingly. 

The dog can become stubborn and bossy, but only if the owner plays into the stereotype and pampers it. High grooming requirements must be considered, for the dog’s coat will not take care of itself. 

The Bichon Frise is an affectionate and intelligent companion for any household that is willing to maintain its pristine white coat.

Bichon Frise History

Originating in the Mediterranean, the Bichon Frise came to Spain and France in the 17^th century and was used regularly as a circus performer. Greatly appreciated for its disposition, the dog was traded worldwide and became a frequently used bartering chip. 

Not until the 14^th century did the Bichon of today get its roots. Italian nobility favored the breed, starting the mane-style trim these dogs for which they are recognized. The Bichon was adopted and pampered by aristocratic bodies all over Europe. They were given full-beds, perfumed, exercised, ribboned, and sometimes given more care than the royalty themselves. 

The 19^th century showed a slight decline in the dog’s condition, as the dog’s popularity combined with the financial hardship of the Napoleonic Wars brought the breed to the common folk. 

The breed first made its U.S. appearance in 1956, and breeding began in 1960. After being accepted into the Miscellaneous class in the AKC, it was later placed in the Non-Sporting Group in 1973. 

Bichon Frise Character

The most important consideration for the Bichon Frise is that it is a people person. It prefers to be the center of attention, so it requires a home with plenty of time to give to it. 

But if not properly trained at a young age, the Bichon Frise can indeed be a bossy tyrant over the household, so it is important to draw the line between attention and pampering. 

They are very adaptable to any lifestyle, for their exercise requirements are low, but they have a lot of energy. The dog may view cats and small pets as toys, so proper socialization is needed. 

In the way of training, the dog learns much from its surroundings and dislikes formal education. The best route is to be patient and try to make learning fun. That way, the dog can be fooled into learning while thinking it is playing. 

While its appearance may suggest a fantastic lapdog, the Bichon Frise is actually very demanding and clingy, preferring play over pamper.  It is a compact, ideal pet for an active family with little room to roam.

Bichon Frise Care

The Bichon Frise requires frequent grooming. They are known as a high maintenance breed. Daily brushing is a must, as their coat tends to mat very easily. Professional grooming every four weeks is recommended to keep them looking their very best. They are prone to skin problems, allergies, ear infections, and deafness. Dental hygiene is extremely important to prevent tooth loss. They are sensitive to fleabites. The Bichon Frise is a breed that does not like to be left alone for extended periods of time and will suffer separation anxiety.

Bichon Frise Training

The Bichon Frise is an intelligent breed, but they typically are difficult to housetrain. They are slow to mature and males are generally slightly easier to train than females. Crate training works best for the Bichon Frise. It is important to be consistent and patient. They do well with obedience and agility training beginning at an early age. The Bichon Frise thrives on socialization and loves to perform tricks.
