Black Russian Terrier Overview

The massive Black Russian Terrier is a misleading breed. Its name implies a fiery and rambunctious attitude, but its personality is the reverse of most terrier breeds. It is a stoic, quiet, and reserved protector, always in need of human contact. Exercise requirements are moderate, needing a daily walk to stay fit. This breed weighs anywhere between 80-150 lbs, so small homes and apartments should be out of the picture for prospective owners. This is not a strictly outdoor dog either. The ideal home for the Black Russian must be a roomy one. Grooming needs are moderate. It rarely sheds but dead hair must still be brushed out. A lengthy, weekly combing should be adequate. Trimming should be done every two months. The Black Russian Terrier is a gentle giant, eternally devoted to any family with the space and time to make it feel included.

Black Russian Terrier History

For the most part, the name Black Russian Terrier is a misnomer. Its body type and personality has little to do with terrier breeds. During World War II, the Soviet Union set out to make a specialized and capable breed of military working dogs. The foundation of this specialized breeding was the Giant Schnauzer, which was interbred with a wide assortment of breeds ranging from Rottweilers and Water Dogs. The first generations of these dogs were simply named Black Terrier. Later generations were the subject of government breeding programs which strived to create an all-purpose worker. The goal was to create a breed which could pull sleds, detect land mines, protect the Soviet border, and pull heavy equipment in punishing climates. The breed proved itself in several military operations, and the official standard was drawn up in 1968. This breed was eventually named the Black Russian Terrier. After the fall of the Soviet Union, many breeders emigrated to the United States, where it became better recognized as a devoted family pet. It was recognized by the AKC in 2004. Today the Black Russian Terrier is rare in the U.S., but it has a small number of devoted followers.

The Black Russian Terrier is tough, reserved, and purposeful. They are wary of strangers, but not aggressive. If socialized properly, they are tolerant of other animals big and small. They will not tolerate aggressive dogs. The Black Russian puts family first, and it is gentle and patient with even the youngest children. It should not be left alone for long periods of time. This breed always needs to be in contact with its family, and it can become stressed and unhappy if left alone all day. It is a strong-willed and independent dog, yet it is still eager to please and is easily trainable. The Black Russian is rarely noisy or destructive, well-suited for indoor life in spite of its large size. The Black Russian Terrier is an eternally devoted family protector, usually seen in the company of a loved one.

Weekly grooming with a brush and comb is required. The ears, nails and teeth require ample attention. Scissoring or clipping for a Black Russian Terrier is sufficient 3-4 times a year.
