The Black and Tan Coonhound is a unique breed because it is both highly athletic and very mellow. Indoors, it is a very relaxed and polite dog. It is so relaxed, in fact, that it is prone to laziness and obesity. Outdoors, it has the endurance to run endlessly. If left unattended or if it runs away, it can track an unfamiliar smell and wander for miles. Because of this physical versatility, the Coonhound needs a home where it can divide its time between indoors and outdoors. It cannot be a strictly outdoor dog because it thrives on family activity. Thankfully, this breed is satisfied with a long daily walk to stay healthy. Coat care is at a minimum, only needing to be brushed when its owner sees fit. They tend to bark and drool. The Black and Tan Coonhound is a unique breed for adventurous owners.
Black and Tan Coonhound History
The Black and Tan Coonhound, though an American breed, existed before the official birth of the United States. Likely coming from cross-breeding between Foxhounds and Bloodhounds, the Black and Tan’s purpose was to track bears and raccoons through the rough Appalachian Mountains. Early settlers needed tracking dogs that could move faster than the Bloodhound because their quarry was swift and agile raccoons and opossums; animals which only came out at night. When their prey would climb up a tree for safety, they would bay until the hunter could catch up and dispatch the animal. Hunting competitions became very popular across the U.S., and the Black and Tan Coonhound has always been a regular competitor. The AKC recognized the breed in 1945. Today the Black and Tan Coonhound is a popular pet for hunting and it is rarely seen in the show ring.
Because the Black and Tan Coonhound is so adept at balancing indoor life with the outdoors, it can adapt to virtually any environment as long as its needs are met. It is not recommended to keep this dog in an apartment, however, as it is a champion at barking. This breed is playful and affectionate, but also independent and generally stubborn. Training can be a particular hassle, because this headstrong dog loves to get distracted by strange smells. If properly socialized, this breed is generally friendly around strange animals and people. Its hunting instinct tends to take over around small animals, however, so a leash is recommended in unsecure areas. It is gentle and friendly around children, but its independent nature makes for a poor playmate. The Black and Tan Coonhound is a versatile and devoted companion, ideally suited for active families or single owners.
The Black and Tan Coonhound requires weekly brushing to minimize loose hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. The long ears must be checked and cleaned on a regular basis to prevent infection. Black and Tan Coonhounds have a tendency to drool so regular wiping of the face is recommended. They may be prone to such health issues as hip dysplasia, ear cankers, PRA, and Hemophilia B.
This breed requires early socialization and obedience with special emphasis placed on recall. The Black and Tan Coonhound may be willful and stubborn due to their ability of independent thought. They do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with respect, firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency. They display talent in agility, tracking, and hunting.
