Border Collie Overview

Bred for herding sheep, the Border Collie excels in intellect and athletic ability.  Grooming requirements are higher than average, but not excessively challenging. Border Collies are essential workaholics who thrive on discipline and are happy as long as they are performing a job. 

It goes without saying that this is an ideal pet for an energetic owner, and it cannot be stressed enough that laid back handlers should look elsewhere. Apartments are not suitable households, for this breed requires regular access to a backyard for running off some energy. Long and frequent walks should be expected, unless the owner can devise a creative exercise method in which the dog will run itself ragged. 

Engagement is the focus of the Border Collie, and the breed should only be considered for those who can handle this little ball of energy.

Border Collie History

19^th century Britain was the host of a seldom known competition, in which herders across the country boasted the superiority of their individual sheepdogs. In 1873, a sheepdog trial was hosted for the purpose of settling the debate. A particular sheepdog, going by the name of Hemp, was said to be such a deft herder that he merely had to stare at sheep to control their movement. Naturally, this champion – and his corresponding breed – became highly desired for breeding. 

Controlled breeding followed, and the result was the Border Collie we know today, earning its name from its widespread use along the English and Scottish borders. 

This breed is so adept and intelligent, in fact, that its arrival in the U.S. made herders swoon and sheepdog enthusiasts jealous. The breed’s rough and rugged appearance caused many to oppose AKC recognition, and they succeeded for the most part. In 1995, a Border Collie appeared in the popular American movie “Babe,” in which a sagely sheepdog named Fly teaches a pig to be a successful herder. Coincidentally, the AKC recognized the Border Collie in this same year.

The Border Collie is indeed a virtuous, hard working dog. But this over-achiever comes at a price. If left to its own devices and not given a job, this dog will easily become bored, destructive, and bratty. 

Herding instincts are ever-present, tending to stare down other animals before chasing them in a playful manner. Thankfully, training is a breeze. This is a breed that tends toward hard work and is very eager to please, always willing to learn alongside its owner or be given direct orders to obey. It is not unlikely to see a Border Collie excelling in the world of obedience and agility competitions. 

While it may be typical for this breed to spend most of its time outside, they also need to be connected to their family. Border Collies do not take kindly to being treated as an outside dog, so it should spend some of its time indoors with the family. This affectionate behavior towards its owners carries over to its interactions with strangers. 

It can be overly protective and even aggressive towards strange people and dogs. Early socialization and training can easily break the dog of these habits, though it still may be too boisterous for youngsters and the elderly. The Border Collie needs to feel more like a trusted employee than a pet, content as long as it is earning affection from its owners.

The Border Collie requires weekly brushing. Special attention should be given to the coat during shedding. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when necessary. This breed is prone to PRA, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, deafness, Collie Eye Anomaly, and allergies to fleas.

Border Collie Training

Early socialization and obedience are recommended. The Border Collie is easily trained and does best with praise, consistency, fairness, respect, and firmness. Due to their extremely sensitive nature this breed must never be treated in a harsh or heavy-handed manner. They are exceedingly talented in herding, police work, competitive obedience, search and rescue, Frisbee trials, and Flyball. Border Collies are also used successfully as therapy dogs and guide dogs for the blind.
