Borzoi Overview

Although a large dog, the Borzoi is an adaptable and mellow breed. Polite and reserved indoors, this breed knows how to save its energy for the outdoors. With a low energy level and modest exercise requirements, it is a relatively easy dog to care for in spite of its size.

Daily exertion is a necessity, but it can be done with free-running in a secure area or in a long walk.

The dog’s coat, while long and thick, is fairly easy to maintain. Its coat can be cared for with one or two brushings per week.

It goes without saying that this dog does not do well in apartments. It is definitely possible, but more work will have to be done on the owner’s part to fulfill exercise requirements.

The best place to live for this breed is a house with a well-fenced yard, where it can play during the day and rest in a warm bed at night.  It is an ideal pet for the casual owner.

Borzoi History

The Borzoi has existed since the middle ages, carefully bred and admired by Russian aristocracy as a sporting dog. Often referred to as the Russian Wolfhound, this breed was often utilized in coursing competitions sponsored by noblemen.

When the dog made its way to the lower classes, it was bred with taller sheepdogs to increase its size, making it a formidable hunter of wolves and protector of livestock. They were also used in large wolf-hunting competitions. It was said that upwards of one-hundred Borzois would compete in these events, in which a male and female were set to a team. After sighting a wolf, the pair would chase it down and pin it until the hunter caught up with them. At that point the hunter would bind the wolf, and then release it upon being declared victor.

The Borzoi has always been a favored breed in Russia. Many documents depict Russian royalty giving these dogs as gifts. But the breed took a turn for the worse during the Russian Revolution, as they were regarded as a symbol of royalty. But by that time, the dog had made its way around the world, and the breed was cultivated elsewhere.

In the U.S., the breed was in high demand among the upper class, particularly movie stars. Today the Borzoi is admired worldwide as a family dog, show dog, and effective hunter.

Borzoi Character

The Borzoi is one of the most agreeable breeds. It is laid back, sensitive, and often timid around strangers. But in the freedom of the outdoors, this sedentary dog will burst with life.

It can be stubborn in regard to training, but a little patience can go a long way. Harsh treatment will only turn the dog away from learning. Consistent, reward-based training is the quickest way to the Borzoi’s brain.

This breed is somewhat independent, and it will usually avoid other dogs and ignore fellow pets. Due to its history as a sighthound, there is little to prevent this dog from chasing squirrels in the park. Leashed walks are preferable to stave off headaches caused by the dog running off.

This breed is almost too gentle with children, and its restful personality makes it an often boring playmate.

The Borzoi’s personality complements its glamorous and dignified appearance. It is best suited for owners who are moderately active.

Borzoi Care

The Borzoi is relatively easy to groom. They need to be brushed regularly with a firm bristle brush and dry shampooed when needed. It is important to keep the hair on the pads trimmed to prevent splaying. Borzois are generally a healthy breed however they are prone to progressive retinal atrophy. They also have an extremely low tolerance to anesthetic and have a tendency to bloat.

Borzoi Training

The Borzoi is considered a giant breed and is not a breed that will fit into every household. As sight-hounds they require constant attention and restraint. They require basic obedience and socialization. They excel in agility. They do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. They are relatively easy to housetrain since they prefer to be clean. The Borzoi requires calm, patient, and consistent guidance with mutual respect.
