Boxer Overview

The Boxer originated in Germany in the late 19th century. This breed's name was supposedly derived from the "boxing" motion they made with their front paws. Boxers are stocky and medium in size with strong jaws and a powerful bite. They are widely used in search and rescue, police work, and military work.

Boxer History

Boxers are the distinct product of selective breeding dating back to approximately 2000 B.C. Their primary use as hunting dogs led them to develop a powerful bone and muscle structure, allowing the dog to overpower large game such as bison, wild boar, and even bears. 

As the popularity of hunting declined after the Napoleonic Wars, Boxers were utilized in the barbaric sport known as bullbaiting. Bullbaiting Boxers were trained in England to latch onto the nose of a bull and hang on at any cost, causing the dogs to be thrown, impaled, and trampled as onlookers wagered on their progress. 

When the dog arrived in America, its newly established success against bulls led to its adoption by cattle ranchers. While not originally bred as herding dogs, their ability is still recognized and used today by farmers. 

The first Boxer was registered by the AKC in 1904, and the first champion emerged in 1915. The breed’s loyalty was tested in both world wars, used as couriers and guard dogs. Their success in these wars and their modern use as police dogs is a testament to the courage, loyalty, and inherent nobility of the Boxer.

Boxer Character

Right from the start, the Boxer is in dire need of manners. Without proper attention, exercise, and training, this breed will treat its home – and anyone living within it – like its own personal playground. 

Although you can get away by living in an apartment, it is not recommended for this breed. It is preferred that the Boxer lives in a home with a sizeable backyard and strong, high fence, as these dogs can be brilliant escape artists. 

Much of the dog’s energy comes from its powerful physique, requiring extensive exercise to burn up its seemingly endless energy supply. The best way to curtail this rowdy behavior is through fetching games, where the dog can get appropriate exercise and mental stimulation, steering it away from getting bored enough to escape the backyard or eat the furniture. 

While the Boxer is good-tempered around other dogs, they tend to be strongly dominant over dogs of the same gender. It is also inadvisable to place the Boxer with small dogs, for it is generally unaware of its size. A poorly placed step could result in serious injury for smaller animals playing with this large dog. 

The Boxer is a problem-child at heart, but a sensible and responsible owner can train the dog to become a loving, loyal, and respectful gentleman.

Boxer Care

The Boxers tight, short coat requires minimal grooming. Occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary to ensure the essential oils are not stripped from their skin. The Boxer is typically clean and will groom themselves. This breed has some major health concerns such as cardiomyopathy, sub-aortic stenosis, and hip dysplasia. They may also be prone to tumors, epilepsy, allergies, and skin problems. A proper diet is absolutely essential due to their sensitive stomach and tendency toward excessive flatulence. The Boxer is an indoor pet as their short coat cannot protect them from cold climates.

Boxer Training

The Boxer is clever and quick to learn. Obedience training is essential. They require a dominant owner capable of controlling them. They do not respond well to harsh treatment. Training must consist of fairness, firmness, and consistency. Boxers do well in competitive obedience and love to learn and perform tricks.
