Brittany Overview

The smallest gundog, the Brittany is the favored sporting dog in France. Sharing many qualities with the English Springer Spaniel, this dog is energetic to the max. 

The key to a happy Brittany is to keep it employed. That is to say, if the Brittany does not feel useful, and it can tell if it is, then it will become unhappy and difficult. 

While the breed can live in the city with proper exercise, it will be easier on its owner in the country because it can exercise itself. With its propensity for work and play, the Brittany is a fun dog both at work and home.

Brittany History

Resulting from a combination of English Spaniels and French Pointers, the Brittany was originally titled the Fougeres (The High Spirited). When combined with the British pointers, the incredibly talented gundog known as the Brittany was created; although the official name “Brittany” was not attributed to the breed until the 1980s. 

Shortly after appearing in the U.S. in the 1920s, the dog was recognized by the AKC in 1934. Dates of the dog’s origins are inconsistent, as writings about the dog did not surface until the 1850s. 

Their immense skill on the field made them very popular, very fast, and they were soon adopted across Europe. Tall tales of the dog’s ability quickly led to the Brittany’s popularity as the basis of judgment for all other gundogs.

Brittany Character

This dog has a huge energy capacity that needs to be regularly curtailed. If unable to vent its energy and feel mentally stimulated, the Brittany will be one unhappy dog. 

What crowns the Brittany as one of the best family dogs is its strong parental instinct. Even with small children, the dog will be patient and nurturing. It also thrives on attention and feeling useful, so it is essential to take it along on car rides, jogs, or any other place so it feels as though it is assisting its master. 

Training is virtually effortless, for this dog relishes in pleasing its owner. Quick to learn and eager to perform, Brittanys excel in obedience and agility competitions. 

It is essential to remember that this is a sensitive dog, so aggressive training will be counterproductive. If properly socialized as a puppy, the dog will be very friendly with other animals, but cats and smaller animals are likely to activate its chasing instinct. 

The Brittany is an ideal dog for any owner that is willing to care for an energetic and brilliant pet.

Brittany Care

A relatively light shedding breed, this dog does require regular brushing to keep coat from becoming matted. Bathing once a month is recommended. Some trimming is necessary if to be used for show.

Brittany Training

As this breed is rather hyperactive, they can become bored easily. Consistent training and a firm hand is recommended to keep you and your spaniel happy. This free thinking breed responds well in hunting or retrieving sports and is easy to train.
