Brussels Griffon Overview

It is widely assumed that the best dogs are those who are restrained and respectful of their owners. The Brussels Griffon proves that assumption wrong, as it is the antithesis of the “perfect dog.” This breed is cocky, self-absorbed and mischievous, never afraid to get what it wants. 

It is an expert at wandering away and escaping the yard when it is not barking like mad. 

But in spite of these personal issues, there is still something worth loving in the Brussels Griffon.  It is moderately easy to train, and its exercise requirements are relatively low, making it a perfect companion for someone unable to leave the home. 

The breed has personality to spare, which it never hesitates to express in any situation. The Brussels Griffon is a unique breed and is certainly not for everyone. It is best suited for an owner who prefers character over obedience.

Brussels Griffon History

Hailing from Belgium, it is said that the Brussels Griffon is a product of the Affenpinscher and a “Stable Griffon,” a common street dog native to the region. Its roguish personality earned it a career guarding cabs, simultaneously repelling robbers and charming customers. 

In the late 19^th century, it was bred with the ever-popular Pug, resulting in a smooth-coated version of the breed. Sadly, many of the smooths were terminated because they went against their name Griffon, which defined their wiry coats. 

The breed’s popularity skyrocketed in Belgium, becoming a favored pet among many noblemen. But their popularity was quickly wiped clean, as the breed was almost destroyed during World War I. 

Today the Brussels Griffon enjoys a cult following, never gaining mainstream acceptance, but rather a number of unwavering supporters.

Brussels Griffon Character

The Brussels Griffon has alot of personality. It is perpetually active, always ready for a crazy adventure or a simple walk through the park. The breed gets along well with other animals, preferring to join in the fun than make up its own games. 

But this breed is not recommended for households with small children, for it is too fragile for unrestrained youth. 

Creative training methods are suggested, as this dog needs everything to be fun and exciting. 

It may be difficult to house-train. 

A companion dog to the end, the Brussels Griffon does not take kindly to being left alone, and it is highly prone to separation anxiety. If it feels neglected, it will be noisy and frustrating until it gets what it wants. 

Brussels Griffon is a unique, tough breed that is hard to label. Its rating as a good or bad dog is entirely dependent on the personality and individual experiences of its owner. This is a spunky, irreverent breed with an honest and lovable character, which is beautiful in its own right.

Brussels Griffon Care

Shedding very little, this breed does need a lot of maintenance on the coat. Daily brushing should keep the coat shiny, clean, and prevent any matting or tangles. The beard around the mouth area should be cleaned regularly to prevent and caking.

Brussels Griffon Training

You must be consistent with this breed, as they tend to lose interest fairly quickly. Obedience classes are recommended, but not required. Make the training fun and you will be sure to keep this dog's attention.
