Bulldog Overview

With its excessive physical exaggeration, it is not unlikely to see the Bulldog as synonymous with “tough guys.” Truck drivers, professional wrestlers, football players, and carnival strongmen are only a few of the human associations given to this burly breed. 

Such a specific and unnatural dog is prone to a number of health problems. Sadly, Bulldogs of poor breeding lead difficult and unhealthy lives, whereas well-bred Bulldogs can live upwards of twelve years. 

Bulldogs are very affectionate, friendly dogs that are extraordinary with children. Novice owners should look elsewhere, as the breed’s prevalent health issues and difficulty to train may be too much to handle.

Bulldog History

Unfortunately, the Bulldog acquired its name in Britain via its frequent use in bullbaiting; a violent sport in which the dog latches onto the nose of a bull and is trampled mercilessly at the delight of onlookers. 

Unlike the Bulldogs of today, the original variety was most likely bred to be vicious and powerful, placing physical beauty on the backburner. Generations of aggressive breeding caused the dog to become uncannily courageous and virtually immune to pain. 

The breed was made obsolete when England outlawed dogfighting and bullbaiting by 1835. But the dog’s unwavering courage and goofy characteristics had made an impression on many dog lovers of the era. 

Because violence was an unnecessary trait for post-1835 Bulldogs, breeders gradually evolved them into the lovable family grunt we know and love today. 

Bulldog Character

As mentioned before, Bulldogs are sometimes great companions for families with children. Proper socialization and treatment result in a very docile breed which is too sturdy for youngsters to overpower or bully. 

Puppies, however, can be too rambunctious and clumsy for the elderly, accidentally causing harm while attempting to wrestle. 

Generally unproblematic with other animals, a male Bulldog will have the tendency to challenge and dominate other males. 

It needs to be established that Bulldogs – as evidenced by their stature – are better suited for brawn than brains. Training can be a nearly impossible undertaking, as learning tends to bounce off their large heads. 

While the dog may not be impossible to teach, it is best to avoid extensive education, for it will be lost on a pet that would much rather play tug of war. 

Those who have their hearts set on intelligent Bulldogs should leave it in the hands of a professional trainer.

Bulldog Care

The Bulldog needs occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when necessary. This breed has a tendency to slobber and drool so daily cleaning of the face is a must. They are prone to such health issues as breathing problems, low tolerance to anesthesia, poor eyesight, skin infections, and hip and knee problems. Nearly all Bulldogs must be born by Caesarean section due to their large heads. They are adverse to weather extremes and are highly susceptible to heat stroke. This breed is also well known for their active gastrointestinal system.

Bulldog Training

Early socialization and obedience are a must for the Bulldog. They have a tendency to be hardheaded and stubborn. It is important that they be taught to know their owner is dominant. They do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, consistency, praise, and reward.
