Bullmastiff Overview

The Bullmastiff came from the blueprints of a security guard. Developed in the 1800s as an anti-poaching guard for gamekeepers, its purpose has since changed to a family guardian. 

Obviously not built for a confined home, this dog needs room to roam. Moderate exercise needs means this dog is low-maintenance, but that does not mean it can be left unattended. Its immensely powerful stature will cause it to accidentally destroy the house and any small children that may be present. The dog is generally unaware of its size, so an improperly trained one will consider itself a lapdog. 

The Bullmastiff is an incredibly loyal family dog that excels if properly trained and socialized. If the owner is not willing to undergo the necessary care, then they should look elsewhere for the sake of safety.

Bullmastiff History

Originating in 19^th century Britain, the Bullmastiff was created to protect the many estates that were victim to poachers. It is the product of specialized breeding between Mastiffs and Bulldogs. The purpose was to tackle and overpower a poacher, but not maul them. That way, the poacher would be healthy for trail and persecution. 

For years, their history revolved around fighting both man and beast, and its original name was simply the “Gamekeeper’s Night-Dog.” Eventually, advancing technology made the Bullmastiff obsolete, and it had no other place except to protect families and their households. 

The early 20^th century saw a significant increase in the breed’s popularity, as it won numerous Challenge Certificates. In 1933, the Bullmastiff received recognition by the AKC.

Bullmastiff Character

Bullmastiff tend to be rowdy and irresponsible if left untrained. They retain much of their guarding instinct, so they run the risk of aggression towards visitors unless that behavior is curtailed. But even then, supervision is recommended when the dog is playing with small children. 

Training can also be a hassle, as these dogs are very stubborn. The best way to make progress is to break its assumption that it is the alpha dog. From there, strong leadership and a firm hand are needed to reinforce what it learns. And the Bullmastiff is immune to any bullying tactics. 

Socialization from puppyhood is ever important, but even then it can be aggressive and untrustworthy around other animals. Particularly concerning other Mastiffs of the same gender, adults will be very aggressive. 

Small pets, as usual with most big dogs, run the risk of being trampled under the dog’s huge paws. The Bullmastiff is a confusing breed. It is an extremely loyal family dog, but its instincts tend to get in the way, making it a potential danger.

Bullmastiff Care

The Mastiff requires minimal grooming. Occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush will suffice. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. The Mastiff is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, ectropion, PRA, cardiomyopathy, and gastric torsion. They also have a tendency to drool and snore.

Bullmastiff Training

Early socialization and obedience are crucial for this breed. The Mastiff requires a dominant handler. They do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. They are eager to please but may be difficult to train. This breed does best with firmness, fairness, patience, respect, and consistency. They excel in guarding, military and police work, weight pulling, and search and rescue.
