Cairn Terrier Overview

A cairn is a large rock that spikes out of the ground and are commonly found in the Scottish highlands. The Cairn Terrier earned its name by digging around these outcroppings, rooting out rabbits and other small game. 

This small dog has changed very little over time, as it retains much of its rugged appearance. Slightly easier to train than other Terriers, it is still not the ideal choice for those who pride themselves on order and obedience. No different than other Terriers in regard to personality, the Cairn is a fiery attention hog as well as a devoted and energetic friend.

Cairn Terrier History

The closest representation of the original Skye Terrier, the Cairn was meticulously prevented from evolving to a newer type through highly specialized breeding. 

Originally, Cairns were disqualified from most dog shows because of their white coloration. But a turn-of-the-century petition sent to the English Kennel Club asked for a White Terrier Club, and it was accepted in 1907. After these “Short-haired Skyes” competed in many tournaments and impressed on a wide margin, the Cairn Terrier was given its name in 1912. 

The white coloration of the dog waned, as the AKC established stringent rules against mixed breeding between Cairns and West Highland White Terriers. The breed was accepted into the AKC in 1917.

Cairn Terrier Character

The Cairn Terrier, although given a different name, is still a Terrier. Bossy and intolerant, this dog has a sense of self-importance that should be catered to if harmony is to be maintained in the home. 

Cairns are moderately more affable to training, but the owner should not expect anything beyond basic obedience. If training sessions are long or repetitive, the dog will quickly lose interest, and progress will be slow. 

Their attitude around children and other pets is similar, for they should be socialized at a young age, and they cannot be trusted with small children and pets. Terriers tend to be impatient with toddlers, and their vermin-hunting instinct will make them a danger around rodents and other small pets. 

Ever curious and ready for adventure, the Cairn prefers to exercise beyond its necessary limit. A well-fenced yard is recommended, for these dogs can leap surprisingly high, clearing fences. Or they might prefer using their instincts to dig underneath a fence to find something fun to do. 

The Cairn Terrier can be an excellent companion or family member if its mental and physical requirements are tended to.

Cairn Terrier Care

The Cairn Terrier must be brushed several times a week. The hair around the eyes and ears must be kept trimmed. Special attention must be given to not over feed, as they tend to gain weight quite easily. The Cairn Terrier, while the smallest of the Terriers, also has the most health issues of the Terriers. They are especially allergic to fleas. The Cairn Terrier is not suited for living outdoors and much prefers to be inside with their family.

Cairn Terrier Training

The Cairn Terrier is inquisitive and quick to learn. They are sensitive, so they require firm, not harsh, training and discipline. They like to learn tricks, and thrive in obedience training. Without training and attention, the Cairn Terrier will become bored and destructive.
