Canaan Dog Overview

The Canaan Dog is a dependable worker and an energetic companion. It is polite indoors, and its simple coat makes for a clean house dog. But this is no breed of slouchers. The Canaan Dog needs a consistent amount of mental and physical exercise to stave off boredom, which it does not take lightly. A daily play session or extended jog is enough to keep it satisfied. It can tolerate most climates, allowing the possibility of becoming an outdoor dog. Coat care is minimal, only needing a weekly brushing to remove dead hairs. The Canaan Dog is built from the ground up for utility, as evidenced by its positive attitude and light, balanced body. Prospective owners must be equally active in order to be a good match for this breed.

Canaan Dog History

Kelev Kanani is thought to be the Canaan Dog’s original breed name. Speaking volumes for its ancient heritage, the name literally translates to “Dog of Canaan,” referring to the biblical region originally populated by Israelites. History describes the Canaan Dog as a breed that developed out of necessity, not controlled interbreeding at the hands of humans. The Israelites were removed from Canaan by the hands of Ancient Rome 2,000 years ago, and their native dog was left to fend for itself in the Negev Desert. Discovered by Bedouins years later, the breed made its name guarding livestock, and it is still renowned to this day. Capable of surviving harsh climates, the Israeli Defense Force developed the breed, which was then feral, for military use in the 1930s. Their efforts succeeded, and the breed quickly became domesticated under the Israeli government’s breeding and training program. These dogs succeeded in virtually any task given, serving as messengers, sentries, mine detectors, etc. They were adopted by the Red Cross during World War II, acting as caretakers for wounded veterans. The breed arrived in the U.S. in 1965, but was overlooked for the sake of fashion. It gained a few admirers, however, and was eventually recognized by the AKC in 1997. Today, the Canaan Dog’s popularity as a house dog increases. Its performances in various competitions are contributing to its slowly rising fame.

The Canaan Dog can be found at most competitions. The show floor, obstacle courses, and field trials are only few examples. Indeed, the Canaan Dog loves to work and loves to please. This breed is very intelligent and outgoing, always ready to learn new things and show them off just as quickly. It responds well to games that challenge the mind, so its exercise needs can be fulfilled in a productive way. It is docile and polite indoors, provided its physical requirements are satisfied. With proper socialization, it is playful around other dogs and pets. Since its ancestors moonlighted as guard dogs, it tends to be suspicious of strangers. Another product of its watchdog heritage is that it likes to bark. The Canaan Dog needs an active family that can make it feel useful, if not put it to work outright.

Canaan Dog Care

This breed is virtually maintenance free. Once a week brushing will suffice; with extra care given during seasonal shedding. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. The Canaan Dog is prone to such health issues as patella luxation, eye problems, hip and elbow dysplasia, and hypothyroidism.

Canaan Dog Training

It is vitally important to remember that the Canaan Dog is a primitive breed. They are slow to mature, independent, and stubborn. This breed requires an experienced owner and trainer. Early socialization and obedience are an absolute must. Canaan Dogs will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods but does need to be shown who is dominant. Training must be done with firmness, respect, fairness, patience, and consistency. They are easily bored with repetition.
