Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Overview

The dog of this long-winded name is synonymous with nobility. The favored dog of King Charles II of England, it is ideal as both a lapdog and sporting dog. 

While not nearly as smart or easy to train as the English Springer, it is still a moderately easy dog to train. This smaller breed is definitely a better family dog than a sporting dog. 

Generally healthy and long lived, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel lives up to its heritage as a Spaniel, excelling both inside the home and outside. 

This breed is the opposite of the English Springer, perfect for laid back families.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel History

With a spotty history, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is speculated to have originated in the East and adopted by Europeans in the 17^th century. The breed is depicted in several works of art owned by the aristocracy, because the dog was favored by the wealthy and most art in those times were created for those who could afford it. 

The Cavalier we know today is actually a specialized version of an all-but-extinct original, created with the advent of dog shows and strict competitive rules. 

While the breed has been immensely popular in England and Britain, it has taken a long while to be accepted in the U.S. In fact, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was not recognized in the AKC toy group until 1996.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an excellent choice for a family dog. Naturally clean and well-mannered, this dog desires attention and will return affection to anyone who gives it. Enjoying lounging as much as exercise, this small dog can exercise on its owners time, not its own. 

It has a non-aggressive nature, so prospective owners need not worry if other dogs or children are in the house. In fact, the King Charles thrives as a social dog, preferring to spend its time participating in family activities. It would be illogical to own a member of this breed only to keep it as an outdoor dog. 

The King Charles may not be the most brilliant breed of dog, but it can still be easily trained to follow basic house rules. 

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a quintessential family pet. When the family gathers in the living room for movie night, the dog will be right there with them.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel must be brushed weekly to prevent

mats and tangles. Special attention must be given to the hair behind the

ears. The Cavalier has a tendency to develop heart abnormalities early in

life. It is extremely important to have regular veterinary examinations.

They are also prone to allergies, deafness, cataracts, and diabetes.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is highly intelligent and eager

to learn. They can be trained in hunting and agility, and also do well in

competitive obedience. The Cavalier makes an excellent therapy dog. They

respond well to gentle training and high praise.
