Chesapeake Bay Retriever Overview

Of all the Retrievers, the Chesapeake Bay version is the most tied-down workaholic of the bunch. Great with a family and children, they are nonetheless independent and not to be bothered by strangers. 

No family should own this dog if they are not willing to keep it busy. With high exercise requirements and a natural desire to be rewarded, this is a breed that will be unhappy if neglected. 

Socialization is very important, for this dog is not as friendly with strangers, human or otherwise, as its Retriever cousins. 

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an excellent dog for an active family with plenty of time to give attention.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever History

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has an interesting origin. Named after a shipwreck that occurred at Chesapeake in 1807, the dog’s progenitors are two Newfoundlands that were salvaged from the ship. This new, special breed was cultivated by enthusiasts in Maryland, and the Chesapeake was born. 

Proving extremely apt at hunting and retrieving, the breed’s popularity exploded among the duck hunting community. Incredibly focused breeding resulted in the dog’s perfection by the time the AKC was established in 1884, and the breed was accepted shortly thereafter. 

Being a Retriever, the Chesapeake is a skilled worker that is utilized in many different lines of work, including bomb-detection, search and rescue, and assistant to the disabled.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Character

More buckled down than other Retrievers, Chesapeakes would always strive for perfect grades if they were human students. They are so focused on their duties, in fact, they feel little need for friends or socialization and are instinctively wary of strangers. This is why socialization as a youth is paramount. If Chesapeakes do not learn how to get along with others at a young age, then the owner will have an outside dog whenever company comes to visit. 

These dogs excel in families with children and are relatively gentle. Toddlers should be supervised, though, because they risk accidental injury during play with such a big dog. 

Training can be a breeze for this breed if the handler knows what he or she is doing. Mentally and physically challenging games are the best way to train this dog. 

If not exercised enough, then this dog will build up a huge excess of energy that it won’t be afraid to expend leaping over a fence or chasing another dog. 

Only families with enough time and energy to entertain and exercise should own a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Care

This breed requires once a week brushing to remove dead hair. It is important to not over groom, as this will damage the coat. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary to preserve the integrity of the water repellant coat. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is prone to such health issues as elbow and hip dysplasia, Von Willebrands Disease, PRA, and cataracts. They prefer cooler climates.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Training

Slow to mature, willful, and stubborn, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever must have an experienced owner. Early socialization and obedience training are an absolute must. They do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, respect, and consistency. This breed displays talents in tracking, hunting, competitive obedience, schutzhund, field spots, and hunting.
