Chihuahua Overview

Like the poodle, Chihuahuas are frequently stereotyped as pampered fashion accessories for people wealthy enough to be crazy. The reality is far from it. 

Although it is the world’s smallest breed, there is no lack of brains or character. Perfectly suited as a lapdog, the Chihuahua is no lounger. With spunk and energy to spare, this breed flourishes as the center of attention. 

Both the long and short-haired varieties of this dog are easy to manage as far as grooming is concerned. The dog’s low weight and minimal exercise requirement make it more preferable to indoor apartment life, in danger of bigger animals and cold weather on farms. 

The Chihuahua’s title of “companion dog” is right on the money, requiring regular attention from its owners.

Chihuahua History

Although presumed to be a South American dog, evidence of the breed’s existence have appeared all around the world. Egypt, China, Europe, and South America are only a few countries with art depicting this small dog. 

It is safely assumed that the Chihuahua we recognize today came from Mexico, after the conquering Aztecs brought a hairless breed with them. The breed’s presence in Europe most likely originated when the Conquistadors brought the dog back to Spain as gifts for royalty. 

It is said that the Chihuahua had mythological purposes as a guide through the underworld. The name “Chihuahua” came during America’s assimilation of Mexico in the 1850s, as most of the dogs in this breed came from the Mexican province of Chihuahua. 

The first Chihuahua was recognized by the AKC in 1908, and both long and short-haired versions were accepted in 1952. 

Chihuahuas have been used in the USA as the long-lived mascot for the fast-food chain Taco Bell.

Chihuahua Character

It is not unlikely to see a family with multiple Chihuahuas. This is because the dog prefers to pick favorites among the household. 

Early socialization is crucial, as the Chihuahua tends to overestimate its size and try to bully much larger dogs. Originally bred to hunt rats, socialization is also necessary to prevent it from hunting smaller pets. 

Yet again, this dog is not recommended for small children, as a lack of self control may lead to a child hurting the dog’s tiny bones. But for the elderly, the Chihuahua is ideally suited due to its ability to be intimate without being overpowering. 

Do not expect much progress in the way of training. Chihuahuas tend to be stubborn and thick-headed at times, so training is a difficult venture. Luckily the dog’s small body severely undermines its destructive capability, leading it to simply gnaw on shoes rather than leave a thousand shreds around the house. 

This is a breed that requires extensive attention and personal interaction to prevent inappropriate behavior. For a highly manageable, infinitely friendly pet, the Chihuahua excels in human interaction.

Chihuahua Care

The Chihuahua requires minimal grooming. The Smooth coat variety requires only occasional brushing. The Long coat variety should be brushed several times a week with a soft bristle brush. Both varieties only need bathing once a month using a mild shampoo. Special care must be given to not get water into their ears as they are prone to ear infections. Dental hygiene is a must to prevent tooth loss. The health issues that affect this breed include slipped stifles, open font or soft spot, eye problems, and heart disease. The Chihuahua does not tolerate cold climates and must be protected when taken outside.

Chihuahua Training

The Chihuahua can be difficult to train, but with patience, love, and consistency do well. They respond best to positive reinforcement. Chihuahuas can be housetrained by either the crate method or the paper training method. Early, extensive, and intensive socialization is an absolute must for this breed.
