Chinese Crested Dog Overview

Appearing in both furry and hairless varieties, the Chinese Crested Dog may not appeal to every aesthetic taste. The hairless is most commonly recognized, and it is certainly an appearance that only a mother could love. 

But one should not neglect the animal simply for its appearance, for the breed possesses benefits that most dogs lack. In regard to the body, this is one of the only breeds ideal for dog lovers with severe allergies. 

Grooming requirements are low, but still there. Just like humans, their bare skin is prone to dryness, acne, and sunburns. 

As a toy breed, it is naturally fitting for most households, and it does not run the risk of heat exhaustion in the summer; although sunblock is still necessary. Excelling in family life, the Chinese Crested has a great personality and will make a long-lived companion for anyone who can recognize the charm in its odd exterior.

Chinese Crested Dog History

As the name implies, the Chinese Crested Dog originated in China. However, it is unusual for a hairless variety of dog to appear in a place where harsh climates are sometimes common. It is assumed that the Crested is, in fact, the progeny of African hairless dogs that were miniaturized to Chinese preference. 

The breed is well-traveled, as sailors regularly carried the dogs on board their ships, using the dogs’ puppies as objects for trade. As a result the Crested Dog earned many nicknames, like the “Chinese Edible Dog” and the “Giza Hairless” in Egypt. 

By the time the breed appeared in American dog shows in the late 1800s, the Crested was an eccentric favorite among wealthy owners around the globe. The American Chinese Crested Club was created in 1979, and the breed was accepted into the AKC in 1985.

Adaptable to any environment, the Chinese Crested thrives on only one thing, the company of its owner. Short or long walks are preferable to this dog, even playing around the house is acceptable in its eyes; as long as this breed is with its owner, it will be happy. 

It is patient enough with children to never bite, but unrestrained toddlers may injure its little body. There is nothing of particular note about the breed’s behavior around other dogs, but early socialization is always important. 

The Chinese Crested is a dog that is too smart for its own good. Always eager to play instead of work, this dog will know when someone is trying to train it, and it will resist any classroom settings. The key to training this dog is through cooperative action. The dog needs to feel like it is participating in something rather than being the object of change. Starting young is always a great idea. 

The Crested sometimes has a tendency toward noise, preferring to make high pitched howls that some consider singing, others consider wailing. While some may disagree, the Chinese Crested Dog’s beauty is more than skin deep.

Chinese Crested Dog Care

The Chinese Crested is very clean and has virtually no odor at all. The Hairless variety should always be protected from the cold and the sun. Using a sunscreen will protect this breed's sensitive skin from sunburn. The Powderpuff needs daily brushing and trimming to keep the coat clean and free of matting. This breed sheds little to no hair.

Being a very intelligent breed, this dog does well in obedience type sports. Consistency is a must, however this breed can be relatively sensitive and should have a gentle trainer. The Chinese Crested is great at performing tricks.
