This massive ball of fluff is as serious as its heavy brow implies. It is an extreme descendant of the Spitz family, in that its weatherproof coat is almost too thick and bulky. Definitely not a dog for those who appreciate good proportions, the Chow Chow is highly muscular and virtually immune to arctic conditions. But this immunity comes at a price, as this dog should only live in a home where it can stay indoors during hot summer months.
It is an exceptionally serious dog, so any owner expecting an exuberant ball of energy should look elsewhere. Grooming requirements are heavy, requiring multiple and extensive brushings a week.
The Chow Chow is an ideal breed for an owner who appreciates a loyal, discriminating dog that sometimes takes itself too seriously.
Chow Chow History
The Chow Chow is a breed that could possibly date back thousands of years. Originating in China and containing Spitz characteristics, it is safely assumed that the breed developed in the far north.
Assumptions about the breed’s purpose are numerous, ranging from the usual hunting/guard dog origin to the unusual. Some accounts report the dog evolving in Manchuria and Mongolia, where its abundant fur coat had an exceptional use as a pelt.
The breed’s name did not appear until its 18th century arrival in England, where the phrase “Chow Chow” acted as shorthand to describe exotic creations from the Orient. Queen Victoria’s interest in the breed bolstered its popularity, and it was widely collected in England and America in the 1800s.
By 1903, the breed received AKC recognition. The Chow Chow enjoyed moderate popularity until the 1980s, when extravagance and big hair was all the rage. After that, the breed became part of the top 10 most popular breeds in the U.S.
Whether an owner finds the Chow Chow’s appearance comical, adorable, or charming, they must respect the breed’s dignity. It is a regal dog that takes itself quite seriously, specifically choosing who it attaches to rather than loving everybody.
They do not enjoy demeaning themselves by performing tricks and learning to shake hands, not even with its family. It is highly suspicious and sometimes aggressive around strangers, being protective of its family.
Around other animals, the breed tends to be domineering and aggressive around strangers, but it is generally well-behaved around household pets. Early socialization is essential in breaking these habits, although it is not guaranteed to work.
Later in life, Chow Chows become less temperamental with everyone. The breed’s personality is best suited for single, non-active companions who fit into the dog’s sedentary lifestyle.
Regular socialization with the family is crucial, so short daily walks or multiple play sessions are the best ways to exercise this dog. The Chow Chow is an adamant and stringently reserved dog that is happy in any family situation as long as it feels respected.
The Chow Chow requires daily brushing. Proper grooming is essential to keep their coat in peak condition. Bathe or dry shampoo as necessary. They are prone to such health issues as entropin, heat prostration, allergies, skin problems, and hip dysplasia. They have a very low tolerance to anesthesia. The Chow does not do well in warm climates.
The Chow Chow requires intense, extensive, and ongoing training in both socialization and obedience. They are relatively easy to housebreak. However, they will only perform tasks that make sense to them. They need to be taught at an early age as to who the master is or they will take over. They require firmness, fairness, and consistency. They do not respond to harshness or a heavy-handed approach and will become aggressive if treated in a disrespectful manner. The Chow is highly talented as a watchdog or guard dog.
