The Cocker Spaniel is a fun-loving American breed suited for work, play, or simple family life. Smaller versions of their English counterpart, they are just as dependent and friendly. It is essential that prospective owners seek well-bred Spaniels, as they are subject to any number of health problems.
Cataracts, allergies, ear infections, and hip malformation are only a few of the breed’s hereditary ailments. A long, full coat is the Achilles heel for family dogs but a source of pride for show dogs. Many owners will likely be turned off by its extensive grooming requirements, but the Cocker Spaniel is an ideal dog for anyone willing to put forth the effort..
Cocker Spaniel History
The smallest version of the Spaniel emerged in the late 19th century. Its first appearance in an official dog show was in 1883, quickly leading to its inscription in studbooks. This is also when Cocker Spaniels were being exported to North America, where their reputation as an athlete earned them a place among hunters.
Over time, their distinct body shape and leg length (their hind legs are shorter than their front) increased the breed’s athletic capability.
The Cocker Spaniel’s silky coat and playful attitude lead to its acceptance as a family dog, making it one of the more versatile breeds.
In spite of the breed’s physical complications, it is an amicable and intelligent companion. The dog has great enthusiasm for education, and its affinity for training makes it a very versatile pet.
The Spaniel was originally bred as a retriever, meaning it has a strong instinct to chase. Breaking it of this habit early on is helpful, lest the owner keep it on a leash whenever out on walks.
Exercise and behavior have a strong link with this breed. If the owner ignores the requirement of daily walks and the dog becomes obese, then the dog will become rebellious and ill-tempered.
The key to success when training the Spaniel is a gentle hand. These dogs have a very sensitive temperament and are turned away by aggressive methods.
If sessions are fun and rewarding, the Cocker Spaniel can be a very well-behaved and intelligent companion.
This breed has a long and flat or wavy coat that requires daily brushing. This breed requires grooming on a daily basis if hair is to stay long. Eyes should be cleaned daily to remove any tear stains. Trimming is necessary. Ears must be cleaned regularly to avoid ear infections.
This breed can be rather difficult to housebreak, but are otherwise very easy to train. Obedience classes are recommended for this playful breed. Initially bred to be used as a gundog, this breed does exceptionally well in obedience if given consistent training with a gentle hand.
