From the guard dog variety, the Doberman Pinscher was specifically created for the purpose of intimidation. Its sleek body and heavy musculature regularly place it alongside policemen and soldiers around the world. A very intelligent dog, the Doberman can learn to become a protective family pet if placed in the right hands.
This athletic breed requires plenty of daily exercise. Prospective owners must be wary, for this dog can pull even the stoutest owner to the ground if it decides to bolt after a small animal.
The Doberman Pinscher is a brave and courageous dog, but proper training and guidance is the deciding factor between a noble defender of the household, or a rebellious and sometimes dangerous beast.
Doberman Pinscher History
Taking the name from its creator Louis Dobermann, the Doberman Pinscher originated in Germany in the late 19th century. The purpose of the breed was to be an ideal guard dog, and judging by its sleek form and densely packed muscles, its threat level was meant to be underestimated. But coming from an aristocratic background, the breed’s physical appearance tended to separate and raise it above its bulky, unwieldy guard dog brethren.
The Doberman’s purpose is still greatly used today in military and police service, though it is also a keen family pet if given proper direction. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1921. The Doberman Pinscher is a cut above the typical image of the guard dog. Where the physical appearance of Rottweilers and Mastiffs are bold displays of power, the Doberman is a sleek, deceptively bold animal that must be seen in action. The Doberman Pinscher to a Mastiff is a sports car to a truck.
Those in search of a Doberman Pinscher should be prepared to pay for professional training. This is an intelligent and bold dog, so it is imperative to take advantage and use their brains to overcome their brawn.
Dobermans greatly enjoy participating in family fun and going on long walks, but it is definitely not a breed for inexperienced owners or those with small children. This is mainly due to the fact that Dobermans have little knowledge of their own strength, so they can easily injure even an adult in play or aggression. Because of this, Dobermans are sometimes viewed as dangerous, which is a half-truth.
Dogs that come from abusive or carefree households can be quite dangerous, channeling its violent instincts as second nature. Furthermore, Dobermans can tell when its owner is inexperienced and harmless, tapping into the proverbial ability to “smell fear.” If domination is not asserted at a young age, the Doberman will (sometimes literally) walk all over its owner. But if the Doberman Pinscher respects its owner, it will be infinitely loyal and trainable.
Doberman Pinschers require minimal grooming. Occasional brushing or wiping of the coat with a damp cloth will minimize loose hair. Dental hygiene is crucial to prevent early tooth loss. It is also important to keep their nails trimmed short. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when absolutely necessary. The Doberman Pinscher is prone to Wobbler Syndrome, Von Willebrands Disease, bloat, hip dysplasia, and congenital heart disorders. They do not do well in cold climates.
The Doberman Pinscher is easy to train but requires a dominant owner. Early socialization and obedience are crucial to prevent shyness, timidity, and aggression. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. This breed does best with positive reinforcement, firmness, fairness, consistency, and respect. The Doberman Pinscher excels in competitive obedience, schutzhund, tracking, search and rescue, police work, and as a therapy dog.
