English Cocker Spaniel Overview

The charming English Cocker Spaniel is more in touch with its hunting instinct than other members of its family. Because of this, there are higher exercise requirements attached to the breed. But this breed is also spared the numerous health problems that its American counterpart is often prone to suffer. 

It is very eager to please and equally easy to train. Its long, silky coat requires a fair amount of grooming, which could turn off owners-to-be. Along with regular brushing, it is also necessary to clip the dog’s fur every few months and weekly cleaning of the ears. 

But if handlers can overlook the grooming requirements, they will find the English Cockers Spaniel a friendly, intelligent, and energetic pet.

English Cocker Spaniel History

There are several members of the Spaniel family, each with its own specialization. The English Cocker Spaniel is developed specifically for hunting and retrieving on land, while others are meant for water. 

Around the 19^th century, two versions of the same breed appeared in London, each with its own size. The smaller of the two became known as the Cocker Spaniel, which was ideal for hunting small game, while the larger was deemed the English Cocker Spaniel, which excelled in flushing larger birds. 

Because the two share the same gene pool, they were largely regarded as the same animal. But when weight limits were abolished at the beginning of the 20^th century, they began their split into separate breeds. 

In 1936, the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America was formed and it abolished breeding between the American and English versions. Finally, the breed received separate recognition in 1946. 

There is still little difference between the two breeds today. In most places the English Cocker Spaniel is simply referred to as The Cocker Spaniel, although the American version has eclipsed the English in popularity.

English Cocker Spaniel Character

There is a lot to like when it comes to the English Cocker Spaniel. Its attitude is positive and playful, but simultaneously eager to learn and respect boundaries. 

This dog can grow up to be rather bossy, however, if it is spoiled as a puppy. With an almost infinite energy capacity and workaholic attitude, this is certainly not a breed for the laid back owner. At least one hour per day of exercise and mental stimulation is needed to prevent this potentially destructive dog from becoming bored. 

Socialization is not entirely necessary for this breed, although it never hurts. They are naturally friendly around strange people and animals, but they are likely to find entertainment in chasing smaller pets. 

Working breeds tend to become quite attached to their owners, and the English Cocker Spaniel is no exception. If its owner spends the majority of the day away from home, it will suffer separation anxiety and become a hassle. It is gentle and affectionate around responsible children, but it does not take kindly to roughhousing or teasing. 

The English Cocker Spaniel comes with some extra baggage, but if its need for affection and exercise is fulfilled, it is an ideal pet for virtually any owner.

English Cocker Spaniel Care

Regular grooming with a brush and comb is required, as the coat is prone to tangles. Special attention should be paid to the hair on the legs and ears. It may be necessary to take the dog to a grooming professional two - four times a year to have excess hair trimmed or plucked. The ears should be cleaned regularly.

This breed is naturally willing to learn and quickly understands what is expected of it. A great deal of understanding and consistency during training is necessary as it may try to take over your role.
