English Setter Overview

The English Setter is a gentle, easygoing breed that is nonetheless energetic and lively. Small homes are tough for this breed, as it requires a lot of exercise. Best suited for a home on a large plot of land, the English Setter is born to run and work. 

Grooming is necessary, but not in great quantities. Brushings should be done 2-3 times weekly, and monthly trimming is needed to preserve the breed’s elegant looks. It is suitable for both hot and cold environments, making it adaptable to any home with enough room to roam. 

Exercise is the primary concern with an English Setter, as it was originally bred to run and track for extensive distances. But it is an ideal addition to an active family that can meet its needs.

English Setter History

The name “setter” originates from the dog’s hunting roots. These dogs would find game for their masters, then crouch and point at the target. 

Dating back to the 14^th century, the English Setter is the oldest representative of this type of dog.  Likely a mixture of various pointers and spaniels, this breed was refined in 1825 by dog-lover Edward Laverack. The result was the foundation of the modern English Setter. 

With the physical appearance taken care of, one of Laverack’s contemporaries by the name of Purcell Llewellin polished the breed to be athletic. These “perfected” Setters made their way America, where they excelled in the show ring and on the field. Today the breed has enjoyed average popularity.

English Setter Character

English Setters are hunters at heart, and it has a very obvious effect on its personality. On a scale from 1-5, this breed is a 7 when it comes to energy and it does not discriminate. If its owner insists on keeping it indoors, it will make due and burn off excess energy at the cost of furniture and any fragile valuables around. 

They are not difficult or selfish dogs, however. They are highly intelligent and biddable. With enough daily exercise and consistent training, this dog is as perfect as any other. It tends to chase small animals and pull on a leash, but it is otherwise a very nice dog. 

Gentle around children, playful with strange dogs, and accepting with strangers; the English Setter has a very affectionate and accessible personality.

English Setter Care

The English Setter requires regular brushing if the coat is to stay in good shape. The feathering of the coat should be checked for burrs as they have the tendency to get stuck in the coat. The English Setter that is used for show should be groomed two three times a week with long brushing sessions and regular cleaning of the coat. Dry shampooing is often used so the natural oils are not removed from the beautiful and long coat. The coat of the show English Setter is commonly heavier and longer than that of the field Setter.

English Setter Training

The English Setter can be difficult to housebreak, but wants to please their owner. Given the proper handling and techniques, English Setters can learn very quickly. Obedience classes at an early age are recommended. The English Setter does best with positive reinforcement, yet should be corrected in a gentle and soft way as this breed is very sensitive and harsh punishment may destroy their lovely temperament.
