German Wirehaired Pointer Overview

The German Wirehaired Pointer is essentially the Swiss Army Knife of the dog world, created for hunting, tracking, ratting, and retrieving in virtually any terrain with infinite energy, all the while being an excellent companion and guard dog. 

It would seem this dog has a lot on its plate, but it has always taken its responsibilities in stride, which provide benefits and problems for today’s dog owner. There is a high exercise requirement attached to this breed, and it will most certainly become destructive if bored and left to its own devices.

German Wirehaired Pointer History

Game-bird shooting began as a privilege of the wealthy classes. But in the early 19^th century, it trickled its way to the working class and became a very popular activity. It became popular particularly in Germany, where enthusiasts set out to create the ideal game dog that could be tirelessly utilized in the rough and varied terrain of the German countryside. 

Through a persistent process of specialized breeding, the German Wirehaired Pointer emerged from a great number of breeds, such as the Polish Water Dog, Pudelpointer, and Griffon. Breeders of the time must have been successful, as the German Wirehaired Pointer is still the preferred and most favored hunting breed in Germany today. 

However, the breed was not officially recognized in that country until the 1920s, around the same time it arrived in the U.S. After its recognition by the AKC in 1959, the breed never managed to climb out of obscurity, but it remains a revered breed in its country of origin.

The German Wirehaired Pointer is better suited for work than socialization and play. Around other animals, while not particularly aggressive, prefers to stay out of games and remain independent. 

At a dog park, it is likely to see this dog wandering along the fences searching for game and protecting the area from intruders. It is a natural guard, always keeping an eye out for its master. If a strange person or animal comes near the Pointer’s owner, it may respond aggressively. 

It is generally patient and friendly around children, but it can be too excitable and boisterous for youngsters. 

The most important factor to consider with the German Wirehaired Pointer is its seemingly limitless supply of energy. It can become restless easily, so it is certainly not for those who are averse to exercise. One to two hours of physical exertion is needed on a daily basis for this breed, lest it become bored. 

The German Wirehaired Pointer is an instinctively energetic and eager dog, only ideal for an owner that is equally energetic.

The coat of the German Wirehaired Pointer requires brushing with a firm bristle brush twice weekly. They also need occasional stripping of the coat. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary. It is important to keep the ears clean and check their feet after the German Wirehaired Pointer has been out working. They are prone to hip dysplasia, ear infections, genetic eye disease, and skin cancer.

This breed requires early socialization to humans and other dogs. They can be stubborn and willful, but are eager to please. Obedience training given in a patient, firm, and consistent manner is crucial. German Wirehaired Pointers excel in agility, tracking, retrieving, and hunting.
