Gordon Setter Overview

The Gordon Setter is commonly recognized as an ideal family pet.  It is a trainable, affectionate member of the family. As a member of the hound breed, it is designed to form strong connections with humans.  

Grooming is a moderate necessity, only needing to be brushed once per week. Energy and exercise, however, are a different story. This is a demanding breed in terms of exercise, so living in an apartment should be ruled out. Daily sprints and long walks are recommended to prevent this dog from being bored and destructive. 

If a prospective owner is looking for a sedentary companion, the Gordon Setter is certainly not for them. But for an active family that includes the dog in most activities, this is an ideal breed.

Gordon Setter History

Originally named the Black and Tan Setter in 17^th century Scotland, the breed did not receive its present name until a century later. The Fourth Duke of Gordon had a special affinity for this breed, and his enthusiasm for breeding the best setter continued well after his death. 

The breed’s foundation was established in the 18^th century, taking its name from the Fourth Duke. But in the 1900s, its name was changed back to Black and Tan. When the breed was recognized by the English Kennel Club, it was once again renamed to Gordon Setter. 

A favored breed among hunters and farmers, the Gordon’s popularity was strong in the mid 1800s, and it was recognized by the AKC in 1892, making it one of the first recognized breeds in the U.S. Today the breed is still loved for what it does best, enjoying modest popularity compared to other setters.

It should be noted that the Gordon Setter does better with people than other animals. The breed’s history is not related to pack hounds, but as close workers with their owners. 

This is an excellent dog with children, although they may be a bit too rowdy for toddlers. They are reserved and suspicious around strangers, but that behavior can be easily molded into politeness. 

If socialized with other pets, the Gordon will be accepting and friendly, treating the animal no different than its owners. But around strange dogs, this breed is known to exhibit aggressive tendencies. 

As a working dog it is highly trainable, but only as long as the owner puts forth the consistent effort to teach and reinforce good behavior. If left to its own devices, this breed will become restless and bored, utilizing its excess energy in a display of bad behavior. 

The Gordon Setter is a renowned family dog, but only if it receives plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to keep busy.

Gordon Setter Care

The Gordon Setter requires daily combing and brushing to maintain the beauty of the coat and prevent tangles and mats. Professional grooming may be necessary. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when absolutely needed. It is important to regularly trim their nails as well as the hair on the bottom of the feet. Gordon Setters are prone to such health issues as bloating, juvenile renal disease, hip dysplasia, lameness, thyroid deficiency, cysts, and progressive retinal atrophy.

Gordon Setter Training

With high intelligence and a willingness to please, the Gordon Setter is relatively easy to train. However, this breed tends to have a mind of their own, so early socialization and obedience is crucial. They occasionally display stubbornness, and may be difficult in housebreaking. The crate method is recommended. They will not respond to harshness, but do best with firmness, fairness, love, and consistency. They excel in tracking, pointing, and hunting.
