Great Dane Overview

One look at the Great Dane is all that is necessary to classify it as the King of Dogs. Elegant and noble, this breed has been favored among European royalty for centuries, primarily for their abilities as boar hunters. 

Although apt for family life, the dog’s great size may not lend it to modern living, for it needs a home with plenty of room to roam. Full grown, the dog can weigh as much as an adult man, ranging from 100-180 pounds. This is important to consider, because the Great Dane is unaware of its own size, leading it to accidentally destroy homes, smaller animals, and even people while engaging in play. 

However, this breed is an enormously great pet for anyone with the utility and environment to hold such a massive animal.

Great Dane History

Although the name implies Dutch heritage, the Great Dane actually originated in Germany even though Egyptian Anubis Statues resemble the dog’s characteristics. Also, Chinese literature around 1000 BC describes “Giant Mastiffs” as being native to the land. But it is the care of German breeders that brings us the Great Dane we recognize today, so credit is appropriately given to them. 

As usual, an exact date is elusive in regard to the origin of the breed, but it is safely assumed that they are very old. The standard which all Great Danes are judged originated with the 1891 Great Dane Club of Germany. The American Great Dane Club began in 1889. 

While the breed is world renowned for its elegance and imposing physique, its image in the U.S. is very unique. The long-running animated series “Scooby Doo, Where Are You!” created the image of a clownish, entertaining family dog in the titular character, who was a Great Dane. 

As new iterations of the show continue, the Great Dane’s popularity as a family pet has not diminished.

Great Dane Character

Early training and socializing is essential for a dog this massive. Not that it is aggressive or violent, but simply because it needs to learn self-control at a young age. Do not let the adorable character of puppies get in the way of responsibility, for its tendency to jump up will be dangerous when it is full grown. Any bossy or dominant tendencies could cause it to harm smaller dogs, so it is recommended that they remain separate from animals that can be stepped on. 

In spite of its large size, the Great Dane is quite sensitive and gentle, so training should be equally sensitive and caring. The last thing an owner wants is a rebellious dog. Essentially, size must be considered in every aspect of the Great Dane. 

Although very affectionate and protective over children, they pose the risk of harming a toddler by stepping or laying on it. These same rules apply with other dogs. The Great Dane is loving, loyal, and intelligent, but prospective owners should remain in the mindset that they are purchasing a horse rather than a dog.

Great Dane Care

Combing and brushing the short coat of this breed regularly is acceptable for this giant breed. Rubber brushing also does well in removing any loose hair. Bathing a Great Dane can be difficult due to his size, but is a relatively clean dog.

Great Dane Training

The Great Dane requires a dominant handler and firm yet gentle training. Obedience training at an early age is best, as this breed can prove difficult to train fully-grown.
