Great Pyrenees Overview

The history of the Great Pyrenees is extensive and detailed, concerning its purpose as a guard dog for livestock over 5,000 years ago. 

With such an illustrious and specific purpose, it goes without saying that this imposing breed is a force to be reckoned with. Sometimes weighing over 100 lbs, this dog is not suitable for every lifestyle. Prospective owners should at least have a sizeable backyard before considering owning this breed. 

It is also quite intolerant of hot weather, so environment should also be taken into consideration. With its weatherproof coat and affinity for indoor life, this breed is certainly not for the house-proud. Only those who don’t mind regular vacuuming should consider owning a Pyrenees. 

Exercise requirements are average, and there is little concern about the dog becoming bored. It is a laid back breed, preferring to do anything as long as it gets to participate with its owners. 

However, such a large breed cannot become overweight, lest it suffers arthritis and other joint problems early on in life. The Great Pyrenees is a gentle giant, but not for everyone.

Great Pyrenees History

The name of the Great Pyrenees comes from the nomadic tribes of Asia Minor, who utilized the breed as guards as they traversed the Pyrenees Mountains. The breed is said to have originated all the way back to 10,000 B.C., but the history of that era is spotty at best. 

It received European exposure in 17^th century France, where the nobility of that region favored it for its royal physique. Louis XIV loved the breed so greatly he declared it the Royal Dog of France in 1675. But by the early 20^th century, the dog was all but an afterthought in French life. The breed saw a great decline in popularity, and it once again found a niche on middle to low-class farms and ranches. 

There was a high demand for the breed in the U.S. in the 1930s, because they were ideally suited for farm life in the many snowy and mountainous regions of America. Its popularity was so great, in fact, that it received AKC recognition in 1933. Today, the breed holds no high demand. This fact actually benefits the breed, as there are few puppy mills specializing in the breed’s creation.

Great Pyrenees Character

The Pyrenees is a very capable family dog. With a serious attitude, this breed is imposing simply because of its firm stature and stoicism. It only takes one look at this dog to know not to tangle with it. 

Early training is crucial to have a well behaved Pyrenees, which can be difficult for novice owners who are overwhelmed by the adorable fluff-balls that puppies are famous for. Keep in mind that these dogs get very big, very fast, and they will dominate any owner whom they find unfit for leadership. 

This breed is famously patient and gentle with even the smallest of children and the eldest of the elderly. They are reserved and noble playmates, so they are unlikely to trample smaller dogs and animals during play. 

However, if provoked by a strange person or animal, the Pyrenees is not afraid to bare teeth and bite. 

This breed prefers the company of its owners, so it is not a good idea to leave it outside all day and all night. As usual with most large dogs, the Great Pyrenees is a great family dog as long as discipline and hierarchy are established.

Great Pyrenees Care

Shedding heavily once a year, the Great Pyrenees requires much maintenance during this period. Regular brushing is always necessary with a medium to long haired breed, and should be brushed all the way to the undercoat to prevent matting. Occasional baths are acceptable.

Great Pyrenees Training

The Great Pyrenees can prove difficult to handle, and train. However, they are very eager to work and please their owner. With the right training techniques, a dominant handler, and proven methods, this breed should be very obedient and loyal.
