Greyhound Overview

Though the Greyhound appears to be an ideally built racing machine, it is in fact a mild-mannered lounge-about. It is an incredibly fast runner, but its endurance runs out rather quickly. Because of this, there is a surprisingly moderate exercise requirement that accompanies the breed. A quick sprint in an enclosed area is all the exercise it needs. However, moving at such a rapid pace makes this dog prone to athletic injuries, such as knee problems and torn muscles. It is important to only allow free-running in secure areas, because a Greyhound at maximum speed is difficult to control. The dog must be allowed indoors as well, for its coat does not afford much weather resistance. Its bony structure requires a soft bed to prevent calluses. Grooming is incredibly simple, only needing to be brushed when the owner sees fit. The Greyhound is a friendly and polite addition to any family with enough free-running space. The breed is often overlooked because of misconceptions about its exercise needs. In that regard, a Golden Retriever or even a Shetland Sheepdog is more of a hassle.

Greyhound History

The Greyhound is one of the oldest breeds in existence. This is mainly because it contains the elemental traits of the original domesticated dog, which was likely bred for the sole purpose of making hunting easier by outrunning its prey. The breed’s date of origin is unknown, but it has been represented in ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Greek art. When they arrived in 10th century Britain, they were admired by all classes for their utility and fashion. Coursing hare did not become a sport until the 19th century, and the Greyhound was - and always has been - its frontrunner. The breed arrived in the U.S. via early immigrants, who valued the breed for the same reasons as the ancients. Soon after the breed’s AKC recognition in 1885, it was split into racing and show categories. Although the Greyhound seems relatively unpopular today, the trend is quickly changing. Many retired Greyhounds easily transition into good house pets. The Greyhound is the only dog breed whose blood is universally compatible with other blood types.

Greyhound Character

The Greyhound – in spite of its racing history – is actually so laid back it is prone to lazy behavior. This is indeed a compliment, considering most owners steer clear of the breed because they believe exercising it would be too difficult. Sadly, many Greyhounds are in need of adoption because they are used for racing then retired in large numbers. The breed is generally polite and gentle around children. Its low endurance means it can live in any home with a sizeable yard. They are good with other dogs and are welcoming of strangers. They have a knack for chasing small animals, however, so a leash is always recommended. Because these dogs are independent, they may not be a perfect companion for a toddler. They are eager to please, so training is relatively easy.

Greyhound Care

The Greyhound's coat is very short and sleek, which doesn't require much grooming. Brushing is minimal, however brushing with a firm bristle brush or a rub down with a rough towel or a rubber glove will remove any dead or loose hair that may be present. This average shedding breed should not be bathed too often, as it will remove the natural oils from the coat and skin, taking away the weather resistancy the coat of this breed retains.

Greyhound Training

The Greyhound is a very intelligent breed, however he is very sensitive so does need an experienced handler. Obedience classes as a puppy are recommended, but not required. This breed should always have a gentle handler, but training should also be consistent if this dog is to excel. The Greyhound should have a variety of training techniques and somewhat of a challenge to keep him fit and happy.
