Havanese Overview

Unfortunately, the Havanese has not received the recognition it deserves due to its relative obscurity until the 1990s. This Cuban toy breed is sturdy, intelligent, and gentle enough to adapt to any lifestyle. 

The only downside to the Havanese is its heavy grooming requirements. Its silky coat can only be maintained through daily brushings and regular baths. 

The Havanese dog is an excellent pet. Be it the country or the city, this little dog is a long-lived companion for people of all ages.

Havanese History

Outside of Cuba, very little is known about the Havanese, for its existence has been widely unknown until after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Many Cuban refugees brought Bichon-like dogs to the United States, where they became widely appreciated for their outgoing and intelligent behavior. 

It is estimated that the breed originated in Malta around the first century A.D. as a favored royal dog. Spain and Italy, being major traders for centuries, are credited for bringing the dog to Cuba, where it was owned by wealthy citizens of the country.

Havanese Character

Being a member of the Toy variety, the Havanese is built for the purpose of companionship. This dog is a treat for retirees due to their low exercise requirements and tireless vigilance. They are also patient, gentle, and robust enough to be continuous playmates for toddlers, but supervision is still recommended, for the youngster could unintentionally hurt the dog. 

The pitfall in the Havanese’s personality is its tendency to be clingy, so it would be cruel to own this dog and leave it out of family activities. 

Training is a breeze for this breed, exampled by their appearance in circuses centuries ago. Proud and somewhat of a braggart, the Havanese enjoys learning so it can show off and upstage other dogs. 

Harsh training can be counterproductive, so keep training sensitive and fun for this dog to flourish. If the proper training methods are practiced, the Havanese is one of the easiest dogs to train. 

Socialization is not entirely necessary, for they have a natural affinity towards other animals, but it is important to teach them that chasing small animals is not appropriate, even though it may be fun. The Havanese is a long-lived, very intelligent, and loyal dog. With proper training and attention, this dog will make a fine companion for any owner.

Havanese Care

The Havanese require brushing and combing a minimum of two times per

week although the coat may be clipped for easier care. It is important to

check the eyes and ears regularly and keep them clean. They are susceptible

to genetic eye disease and ear infections. The Havanese need to have their

teeth brushed weekly so early tooth loss is prevented.

Havanese Training

The Havanese is always eager to learn. They do well in both

agility and obedience. They also love to swim and enjoy many water sports.

They take great delight in being the center of attention and with their

quick wit are easily trained to perform tricks. Their sweet and loving

dispositions make them great therapy dogs. The Havanese, like many toy

breeds, may be difficult to housebreak. It is important to train this breed using firm, fair, consistent and loving direction.
