The Ibizan Hound is an extremely athletic and rugged dog. Coming in rough and smooth-coated varieties, this breed can withstand virtually any outdoor activity. This is important to consider, because it will not be happy in the company of laid back owners. Its exercise requirements are moderate, needing a good daily walk or long sprint in an enclosed area. Depending on the coat, grooming requirements can be very simple or modest. Either way, a prospective owner need not worry about extensive brushing or clipping. The Ibizan Hound is an independent but loving companion, well-suited for active families or single owners.
Ibizan Hound History
One of the most ancient breeds, the Ibizan Hound shares many physical characteristics with the Pharaoh Hound. It may have been popular in Egypt, perhaps, as evidenced by its uncanny resemblance with the god Anubis. Its name reflects its place of origin, the Balearic island of Ibiza, which is the third largest of the 50 Mediterranean islands. A relatively small and secluded place, the island existed throughout history with little disruption. They traded with the ancient Egyptians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, and today, Spanish. The Ibizan Hound, which was virtually unaltered in all that time, was exported around the world. It was renowned for its rabbit-hunting ability, because the harsh island weather weeded out all but the hardiest of the breed. The dog first arrived in the U.S. in the 1950s. It was widely considered a striking and beautiful breed, but never gained high fame. It was recognized by the AKC in 1979. Today, the Ibizan Hound is one of the rarest breeds in the U.S.
This unique breed has very strong ties to its hunting ancestry. It is independent, loyal, and gentle. Around other dogs, the Hound will run and play without any issues if properly socialized. It is reserved around strangers. An alert and ever-noisy watchdog, additional training may be needed to keep it from barking excessively. Since this breed is of hunting stock, it will not hesitate to chase small animals if given the chance. It has the unique characteristic of barking while chasing its prey. This dog is gentle and friendly around children, but may be too independent to make a good playmate. Training may be a slight chore, but it is not impossible with enough time and patience. The Ibizan Hound knows how to divide its time between indoors and outdoors. It is well-mannered and polite in the home. Because of this, it is a unique, rare, and great companion for any active owner.
This average shedding breed is relatively low maintenance when it comes to grooming. A wipe down with a damp washcloth for the smooth haired should be sufficient. It is recommended for the rare longhaired to be occasionally brushed and clipped to prevent matting. Wirehaired does not need hand plucking, but would respond well to an occasional brushing.
This breed requires a gentle hand, yet consistent training as they become bored easily. If not given the proper training and socialization, this breed can become a tyrant. Does well in hunting and retrieving sports. Eager to learn, and learns very well.
