Irish Setter Overview

Unlike most working dogs, it is generally recommended that prospective owners of Irish Setters should avoid puppies from working stock. This is due to the fact that this breed is infinitely energetic from the start, and one from the aforementioned stock would be virtually uncontrollable. 

Irish Setters are ideal for family life, but only under the condition that their family is energetic and attentive. This is a breed that demands attention and requires the expenditure of energy whenever possible. Small apartments will never be appropriate for such a dog, not even small houses are ideal. 

The best place for this breed is a big house with a big backyard, where they can free-run and exercise themselves. Daily walks are not enough for the Irish Setter.

Irish Setter History

While the official origins of the Irish Setter are unknown, they have been proven to be the descendants of a combination between English and Gordon Setters. The original products were both red and white, but red eventually won out and became the standard. 

These dogs were favored not only for their working ability, but for their rich, dark red coats. They trickled out of Ireland in the early 19^th century and proved themselves just as capable, if not more, than the native retrievers of the time. 

Meanwhile, Irish dog enthusiasts attempted to create the standard for the breed. In 1862, a puppy named Champion Palmerston was born. His physique was considered undesirable to the breeder, who ordered the dog be destroyed by drowning. But another enthusiast saved Palmerston, who became the foundation for the Irish Setter we know today. 

The breed’s beautiful coat earned it an evolution from working dog to show dog, and eventually to family dog. While naturally popular in Ireland, the Irish Setter have only enjoyed the spotlight in the U.S. since the 1970s.

Irish Setter Character

If there is any danger in this dog, it is the potential for accidental damage caused by too much affection. The wagging of its tail will sweep off coffee tables, its boisterous bounding and jumping will knock over people and furniture, and its overly friendly nature could get it into trouble around other, serious dogs. 

It is said that Setters are highly difficult to train, but that is a misjudgment. Their original purpose was to track, mark, and retrieve game. Because of this, they have an instinct for running ahead of their master and making independent decisions. While the breed may not be the easiest to train, it is because of an instinctive drive and not a poor character trait. 

Early socialization is not entirely necessary, because this dog is generally very friendly with strangers both human and animal. But they pose a danger around fragile individuals, tending to inadvertently cause injury while getting caught up in the moment. 

Certainly not for the house-proud, the destructive capabilities of the Irish Setter grow with its age, chewing up shoes as a puppy and knocking over furniture as an adult. The Irish Setter is a breed best suited for the open air, requiring a home with a large plot of land and a family willing to keep it entertained.

Irish Setter Care

An average shedding breed, daily brushing or combing is required to keep the coat flat and free of mats or tangles. Bathing only when necessary, this is a rather clean breed and does not require much coat maintenance.

Irish Setter Training

Firm handling is a must with this stubborn and free spirited breed. May be difficult to train, but consistency and exercise will ensure a happy life with your Irish Setter. Does well in hunting activities and water retrieving.
