Irish Water Spaniel Overview

The Irish Water Spaniel is a dedicated, hardy, and very intelligent working breed. Its original function was for water retrieving, and little has changed over time. This is a utility dog that is relatively high maintenance. Exercise requirements are high, and it needs to be given a job and mental challenge to keep it from becoming bored. If restless, this breed will likely vent its extra energy in undesirable ways. At least an hour-long free-running session is needed to keep this dog happy. Grooming is also a high requirement. Like most dogs, this breed sheds its coat annually. Unlike most dogs, this breed’s curly hair tends to catch and retain dead strands. If not brushed extensively, matting will certainly occur. The Irish Water Spaniel is one of the oldest Spaniels. It is also the tallest. Its official origin is unknown, as it is depicted in manuscripts and paintings that date back 1,000 years. This breed is further referenced in 17th century manuscripts and later. The breed makes an appearance in French and Irish aristocratic history many times. Around the 18th century, there were several spaniels in existence - such as the Northern and Southern Irish, and the Tweed Spaniel - which were all very similar to the Irish Water Spaniel. The breed made its official historical appearance in the 19th century with a dog named Boatswain. This particular dog was of such popular breeding, it is considered in many circles to be the ancestor of today’s Irish Water Spaniel. This breed was so popular, it was the third best sporting dog by 1875. Unfortunately, the 19th century was the peak of this breed’s popularity. Its fame has declined since, and it is rare today. However, the Irish Water Spaniel is still renowned for its incredible sporting ability.

The Irish Water Spaniel is the kind of dog that likes to do whatever it can, whenever it can. Lounging indoors is just wasted time for this breed, especially when it can be running, playing, swimming, jumping, or hunting outside. It has clownish tendencies, and it would rather play a game than learn something. Training can be a hassle in this regard, but it will learn quickly if the learning process is integrated into a game or other mental challenge. It is friendly around other dogs and pets, and it is reserved around strangers. It should not be off-leash in unsecured locations, for it will chase any small animal it sees. Though the breed is gentle and patient with children, it may be too energetic and independent to be a playmate. The Irish Water Spaniel is an excellent dog for the active, outgoing owner. Note: This dog will not hesitate to jump out of a boat!

Irish Water Spaniel Care

This breed is high maintenance and requires extensive grooming. To prevent matting they must be brushed daily. Regular professional trimming of the coat is an absolute must. Bathing should only be done when necessary using a mild shampoo to protect the natural oil of the coat. The Irish Water Spaniel is prone to elbow and hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and eye problems. This breed may slobber and drool.

With a desire to please, the Irish Water Spaniel is capable of learning a great deal. However, they can be independent and stubborn. Early socialization and obedience are recommended. Irish Water Spaniels respond best to firm, fair, and consistent training methods. They quickly become bored with repetition, so short varied sessions are ideal. It is important that family members establish leadership or this breed will refuse commands.
