Japanese Chin Overview

If a prospective pet owner is stuck between getting a cat or a dog, then they should consider the Japanese Chin. This tiny lapdog is an infinitely loyal companion, following its owner whenever and wherever. 

Grooming requirements are not tremendously high, and any exercise should be enough to keep it fit. 

It is polite and playful, enjoying itself playing a game outside or resting in the lap of its owner. 

The breed’s shortened face make it prone to breathing problems, and owners should take note of excessive wheezing or other breathing difficulties. This dog does not do well in particularly hot weather, so environment should be taken into consideration.

Japanese Chin History

In spite of the breed’s name, the Japanese Chin got its start in China as a favored aristocratic pet. This is one of those breeds that is so revered and appreciated, they were traded between aristocrats as gifts. 

Little is known about the dog’s introduction into Japanese culture, but it is likely that the breed was brought home by Japanese Buddhists who traveled and perfected their philosophy. What is known is that the breed instantly received favor with the Imperial family of Japan, becoming a popular pet and stylish decoration. 

Chins likely came to Europe with Portuguese traders in the 19^th century, as the breed’s first documented appearance was in 1853. As the 20^th century drew near, the breed was accepted into the AKC as a “Japanese Spaniel,” which was actually a larger dog than today’s Chins. Unlike other breeds coming from Japan, the Chin was relatively safe during World War II, avoiding near extinction. 

Today the breed is most popular in Japan, but it finds a place in a small minority of homes worldwide.

Japanese Chin Character

The brightest feature of the Japanese Chin is its easygoing nature and friendliness to other people and animals. Though socialization should always be practiced, this breed generally enjoys the company of others, be it family or strangers to play with. 

One thing to consider, however, is that the dog’s eagerness make it susceptible to being hurt around larger dogs and unrestrained children. It is a small dog with a big heart, so its fragility should be taken into consideration. 

Training needs to be positive and rewarding, as this is a sensitive little dog that will respond poorly to harsh treatment. 

This is an excellent companion for families, single owners, or retirees, and it can live virtually anywhere due to its adaptable personality. Many owners tend to pamper this sort of dog, which will invariably result in selfish and bossy behavior. 

For the most part, the Japanese Chin is an agreeable pet for almost anyone, and it can be a long-lived, ideal member of the family.

Japanese Chin Care

The Japanese Chin requires daily gentle combing and brushing to keep the coat free from tangles. They must be combed and brushed in a specific manner, so a lesson from a professional dog groomer is recommended. Bathe only when necessary, and dry shampoo occasionally. The eyes and ears need to be cleaned and checked on a daily basis. As is the case in many short-muzzle breeds, the Japanese Chin is prone to respiratory problems. They also have a tendency toward eye infections and heat prostration.

Japanese Chin Training

The Japanese Chin is much more obedient that most of the other toy breeds. They are eager to please, so training is done quite easily. This breed excels at learning and performing tricks. Since they are sensitive and mild mannered harsh training methods must never be used. They respond best to gentle, loving, fair, and consistent methods. Basic obedience is recommended.
