Keeshond Overview

The Keeshond (pronounced kayz-hond), is an intelligent, adventurous, people-oriented ball of fluff. It is adaptable to most living conditions as long as it gets some daily exercise. 

The only places it has trouble living are those with hot and humid climates. 

Like most Spitz breeds, the Keeshond desires the company of its owners. In spite of its hardiness and tolerance of cold weather, it is certainly not an outdoor pet. It is an ideal indoor dog, reserved and polite until it goes outside to burn off energy. 

Grooming is higher than average, but not a terrible chore. It only needs to be brushed twice weekly, more when shedding. Aside from the fact that it is not a good guard dog and grooming requirements are moderate, there are few negatives to the Keeshond. It knows how to relax, but it is always ready for adventure when its family can provide.

Keeshond History

Although its official origin is unknown, it is safely assumed that the Keeshond originated in 18^th century Holland. Often used as a watchdog on Rhine River ships, it earned the nickname “Barge Dog.” 

It became a symbol in political cartoons about the oncoming French Revolution. The dog, names Kees after its owner Kees de Gyselaar, turned into the dog of the people. But its popularity was short lived, and its entanglement in political events resulted in a near-extinction of the breed. When the patriots ultimately lost, many of them abandoned their Keeshonds in disgust of the losing party. Furthermore, the Keeshond became obsolete as bigger dogs worked on the ever-growing barges traveling down the Rhine. 

The breed was saved in a desperate effort in the 1920s. Love for the breed returned in 1925, as it made its way into England. Popularity grew in the U.S. as well, achieving AKC recognition by 1930. 

Thankfully Holland’s citizens have managed to leave the past behind them, and they have since made the Keeshond their national dog.

Keeshond Character

Keeshonds pick up a lot from the behavior of their owners. If sensibly raised and socialized, it is easy to cultivate its easygoing and affectionate nature. But in a noisy, high-stress environment, the dog may become rowdy and boisterous. 

This speaks volumes for this breed’s affinity for family life. By merely picking up on the “vibes” in the house, the Keeshond will adapt and identify with the behavior. They are brilliant with children of all ages, usually forming strong bonds with their playmates. 

It will let its owners know if it feels neglected, as this breed has no hesitations about barking. 

There is a danger of obesity in these dogs. They will happily consume whatever its owner gives. Couple that with sedate tendencies, and there is a formula for an overweight dog. 

They are trainable dogs who are quick to learn. But if training is not reinforced or reminded, they are likely to forget. This breed is friendly to essentially all things. Strangers, strange dogs, fellow pets, all are loved by this dog. The Keeshond is an active dog, but not a proactive one. Its owner must be aware of its exercise requirements, because it will not take the time to remind anyone.

Keeshond Care

The Keeshond requires thorough daily brushing. It is important to never clip this breed for the summer as the outer coat provides insulation from the heat and sun. Keeshonds are very clean breeds that will generally groom themselves. Bathing should only be done when necessary. Dry shampoo as needed. They may be prone to hip dysplasia, slipped stifles, Von Willebrand's disease, hypothyroidism, and epilepsy.

Keeshond Training

The Keeshond can be quite a challenge in the area of training. They have a mischievous streak and enjoy making up their own routine. They are extremely adept in obedience and agility. They do best with consistency, fairness, and structure. They become bored with repetitive training.
