Kuvasz History

The exact origin of the Kuvasz is unknown, but it is safely assumed that this breed existed since the Middle Ages. In fact, this breed may have descended from ancient Tibetan dogs. Its name is Turkish, implying the breed traveled to Hungary via Turkey. The name is an evolution of the Turkish word kawasz, which stands for armed guard. This is appropriate because the original purpose of the Kuvasz was to protect people as well as livestock. It can also be said that this breed held great esteem in the past, because its history was meticulously recorded. Breeding was a very planned-out process, and families of Kuvasz may have existed alongside Hungarian royal history. The breed’s purpose was to protect estates from raiders and sometimes large animals. It is not unlikely to read a historical document that depicts a Kuvasz fighting a wolf or a bear. Over time, the breed was afforded by the peasant class who used them to protect livestock. Its popularity among the poorer classes was so high; the dog achieved more of a low-class connotation than a higher one. This is evidenced by the name Kuvasz, which translates to “mongrel.” The breed nearly went extinct during World War II, but German dog enthusiasts ensured the breed’s safety. Parents should be mindful when their children’s playmates are over, because the Kuvasz may mistake roughhousing as an attack on the child. If properly exercised, it is quiet and polite indoors. It needs to feel included in family matters. Although the breed is extremely dedicated and loving, it can be stubborn about training. Training can only be completed with patience and a gentle hand. The Kuvasz is a dog that acts only on good intentions. It is a noble protector of the family, which is both a positive and negative quality.

Kuvasz Care

The Kuvasz should be brushed on a regular basis all the way down to the undercoat. This will remove excess hair during shedding, and will keep the hair free from mats. This breed does best in colder climates mentally, and physically. In warmer climates, the Kuvasz tends to shed quite a bit all year round, while in cooler weather, he sheds seasonally.

This breed is naturally very intelligent and obedient, however he should require a firm handler yet gentle training as this breed can be sensitive to the tone of your voice. The Kuvasz does remarkably well in herding and obedience.
