Lhasa Apso Overview

While the Lhasa Apso has the pampered exterior of a lapdog, it is in fact a strong-willed, independent companion. Bred in Tibet for many purposes ranging from guarding to “good luck,” this is a highly adaptable pet well-suited for most families. 

The word “most” is the operative word, for this little breed has a few specific needs that must be fulfilled in order to have a harmonious household. The deal breaker, as usual with most long haired dogs, is their high grooming requirement. Their silky hair does not stay that way naturally; it can only be maintained through rigorous daily brushings. If not regularly groomed, the Lhasa Apso is prone to skin and eye problems as their hair becomes dirty and matted. 

If these grooming requirements can be fulfilled, the Lhasa Apso is a devoted friend for most.

Lhasa Apso History

Little information is available for the history of the Lhasa Apso. Originating centuries ago in Himalayan monasteries, there is little textual evidence outlining how they came to be. They were used for many things in these monasteries, both as companions and sentinels, because their keen senses made it easy to distinguish between friend and stranger. 

The first Apso appeared in the U.S. in 1933, as a gift to an American citizen from the 13^th Dalai Lama. Merely two years later, the breed was recognized by the AKC.

Lhasa Apso Character

A surprisingly boisterous pet, the Lhasa Apso enjoys long walks or short ones, happy to adapt to whatever its owner desires. Early socialization is helpful, for an untrained Apso prefers to entertain itself by chasing small animals. 

Apsos have a lot of esteem and tend to feel self-important. With a very strong sense of dignity, this breed should not be left unattended with toddlers, for it will not tolerate rough play or teasing. 

The dog’s attitude should also be factored into training. Lhasa Apsos need to be convinced that learning is important. If it sees no point in repetitive training, then it will gladly ignore whatever its owner tries talking it into. But if the dog can be coaxed into it, it will gladly learn virtually anything. 

The main purpose of this breed is to give and receive affection. That being the case, Lhasa Apsos are ideal companions for retirees and anyone who may be confined to their homes. Their rigidly independent tendencies tend to create relationships with their owners that are more like friends than pets. 

But this breed is also ideal for families with older, sensible children. If the personal needs of the Lhasa Apso are met, this happy little dog will make a proud member of the family.

Lhasa Apso Care

The Lhasa Apso requires daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats. Their coat, if grown long, is extremely high maintenance. They may be bathed or dry shampooed on a regular basis or as necessary. They are very prone to ear infections and eye problems, so check-ups and regular cleaning are important. The Lhasa is susceptible to skin problems if not kept free of parasites. Kidney disease is the most serious health problem found in this breed.

Lhasa Apso Training

The Lhasa Apso typically displays an arrogant and obstinate attitude. They may be difficult to housetrain, so the crate method is recommended. Intense early socialization and obedience are a must. They require firm, assertive and consistent commands, and will respond to praise and reward. The Lhasa will take charge if they are not trained clearly as to who is master.
