Lowchen Overview

The Lowchen is a member of the Bichon family of dogs. Its name, which is pronounced “Lerv-chun,” translates to Little Lion Dog. The name is apropos not only for its mane-like appearance, but also for its proud and lively personality. They have high energy but low exercise requirements, making them lively and affectionate little companions. A brief daily walk is all that is necessary to keep this breed healthy. It is an alert watchdog, and it is always ready for fun and adventure. This breed excels in small homes and apartments. If kept in a backyard, it may dig underneath an unsecure fence. Grooming needs are higher than average. Its coat needs to be brushed every two days, and regular clipping must be done to preserve its “lion” look.

Lowchen History

The precise origin of the Lowchen is unknown. Its history is complicated further because Russia, Germany, and France have claimed the breed for themselves. The breed’s appearance closely resembles the Bichon Frise and Havanese, which are of French and Cuban descent, respectively. However, German art from the 1500s are the earliest records of the breed, displaying the traditional “lion cut” that distinguishes it. In spite of its spotty history, it can be safely assumed this breed has made an impact on many cultures. For an unknown reason, the Lowchen’s population was dangerously low. It is by the efforts of two enthusiasts that the breed did not become extinct. By the 1960s, the breed had migrated to Britain and the U.S. and underwent exclusive breeding. Today most of the Lowchen population is the product of said breeding. The Lowchen was accepted into the AKC in 1999.

Lowchen Character

The Lowchen is an affable, friendly little dog. It does very well with other dogs if socialized at puppyhood, but it will always run to investigate a strange animal. It is calm and welcoming toward strangers. This breed is gentle around children, but it does not take kindly to rambunctiousness. The Lowchen is adaptable and always ready to do what its owner wants. It can either be playful or calm, depending on its owner’s mood. This dog is moderately easy to train, and it does best when given a game the challenges the mind. The Lowchen is an easygoing companion, well-suited for families, single owners, or even elderly individuals.

Lowchen Care

The classic leonine look of the Lowchen requires a professional grooming every four to six weeks. The unclipped hair must be combed daily to prevent tangles and mats. Bathing should be done on a weekly basis. It is important that sunscreen be applied to the shorn area to prevent sunburn. Lowchens are generally healthy, although they are prone to subluxated patellas, eye irritations caused by hair, and skin irritations on the shaved areas.

Lowchen Training

The Lowchen's high intelligence and willingness to please make them easily trained. They excel in agility and obedience. Early socialization is important for this breed. They respond best to gentle, fair, fun, and consistent guidance. Proper training will discourage their tendency to bark excessively and curtail their tendency to dig.
