Maltese Overview

A quintessential lapdog, the tiny Maltese was bred with a gentle temperament that reflects its exterior beauty. The dog requires little exercise and training, making it ideal as both companion and decoration. 

Yet the Maltese still requires plenty of attention, particularly due to its elegant coat. Only owners that are willing to shoulder the grooming requirements should consider this dog. 

Although it appears prissy and stubborn, the Maltese is actually a very energetic, playful, and adaptable pet. City or country, this breed is happy anywhere as long as it is alongside its owner.

Maltese History

Centuries of documentation invariably place the Maltese among aristocratic owners. 

Malta, the ancient Mediterranean city, was renowned for its cultural achievements and held in high regard as a relatively advanced civilization. Poets regularly wrote about the dogs from that region, likening them to precious stones and other valuables only afforded by the wealthy. 

Over time, the Maltese’s value grew thanks to artistic endorsement. Years of poetry, classical literature, sculpture and paintings are about the infinite beauty and intelligence of the breed. 

The first Maltese came to America in 1877 and it was accepted into the AKC in 1888. 

Today, pop culture relegates the dog as a prized possession of the insanely wealthy. Not surprising, since the Maltese has indeed been the subject of pride among generations of refined and wealthy people.

Maltese Character

The Maltese is an all-around ball of love. Friendly with children and other dogs, one seldom has to worry about the pet’s safety; unless, of course, the dog is playing with other larger pets. 

Young children could also pose a danger to this dog, for its tiny physique makes it breakable in the wrong hands. 

Along with the standard behavioral training, the Maltese also benefits from optional obedience training. If the dog is spoiled and treated like a toy, however, then it will become bossy and adopt clingy personality traits. 

If the owner plays into the dog’s intelligence and treats it with respect, then it will reward said treatment with affection and infinite levels of obedience. 

One thing to watch out for is the dog’s tendency to be dependent. As toy breeds are likely to do, they highly depend on the affection of their owners. 

If ignored or left alone too long, the dog may become destructive and anxious regardless of how well trained it is. 

Those are minor concerns, however, as the Maltese is a brilliant and loving companion for any owner that admires its companionship.

Maltese Care

The Maltese coat requires daily brushing and combing to prevent matting. The coat is extremely soft and silky, so gentle care is highly recommended. They need to be bathed or dry shampooed on a regular basis. The eyes need daily cleaning to prevent staining. It is also important to keep their ears clean and free from stray hair. They may be prone to eye problems, skin disorders, and respiratory problems. The Maltese do not do well in very hot climates or damp conditions. They may be finicky eaters and suffer indigestion. Dental hygiene is important to prevent tooth loss.

Maltese Training

The Maltese may be difficult to housebreak so crate training is recommended. They do best with early socialization. Training must never be harsh in nature. It must be done with gentle love, consistency, reward, and patience. They are adept at learning tricks. The Maltese does not need extensive obedience training, as they are naturally obedient to their Master.
