Manchester Terrier Overview

Though the Manchester Terrier is split into a ‘normal’ and ‘toy’ variety, they are essentially the same size. The Standard weighs between ten and twenty pounds, the Toy weighs just under ten. As far as Terriers are concerned, the Manchester is generally more polite and eager to please. They do well indoors, but are energetic and excitable once they leave the house. The breed’s short fur makes it incapable of being a strictly outdoor dog, as it has a low tolerance of cold weather. Grooming is virtually unneeded, requiring baths and brushings only when the owner feels it is necessary. It is not a very sociable dog, however, preferring to spend its time in the company of its owner and no one else. This breed has bountiful energy and it is always looking for an adventure. Certainly not for the laid back owner, the Manchester Terrier is a highly affectionate and biddable companion.

Manchester Terrier History

Originally referred to as the fabled Black and Tan Terrier, the Manchester received its name in the mid 19th century. Appearing in 16th century England, this breed was renowned for its ratting ability for work and for sport. As large factories began to move into the cities, this dog was needed more than ever; and its popularity skyrocketed as a result. As workers left the factories at the end of the day, they preferred to spend their quality time at the dog tracks. Whippets were the most popular racers at the time. With the Black and Tan Terrier and the Whippet at the peak of their popularity, they were interbred by enthusiast John Hulme. He intended to create a dog that could race and rat at the same time. Hulme brought this refined breed to his home in Manchester, where it was further cultivated. In 1860, the breed was officially named the Manchester Terrier, only to be renamed “Black and Tan” in 1923. In 1959, the breed was recognized as one breed in two forms, Toy and Standard. Today, the Manchester Terrier enjoys moderate popularity.

Manchester Terrier Character

While it retains the fiery, adventurous attitude that is characteristic of Terriers, the Manchester Terrier is less independent. It prefers the company of its owner, whether it is in a vigorous game in the park or napping at the foot of the bed. Although it has high energy and moderate exercise requirements, this breed knows when to behave itself. It is polite and unproblematic indoors as long as it can spend enough time outside during the day. It is not a particularly destructive breed, but their inquisitive nature encourages them to dig. Furthermore, their tendency to attach to an owner may cause separation anxiety when left alone. Training is not the easiest with the Manchester. It is indeed more eager to please than other terriers, but it still retains its roots, preferring to play than learn. But with strong leadership and a gentle hand, this breed will learn quickly enough. The main issue with these dogs is that they are not very sociable. If properly socialized at a young age, they will be friendly enough with other dogs as to not cause trouble. But they are reserved and skittish around strangers, and they find great enjoyment in chasing other animals. The Manchester Terrier is better suited for single or adult owners rather than as a family pet. They are infinitely devoted and alert companions, and that is all they prefer to be.

Manchester Terrier Care

This breed requires minimal grooming. Occasional brushing will minimize loose hair. It is important to check and clean the ears and teeth on a consistent basis. The Manchester Terrier is prone to cataracts, epilepsy, glaucoma, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, patella luxation, and Von Willebrands disease. This breed prefers warm climates but should not be left in the sun for any length of time.

Manchester Terrier Training

Early and intense socialization and obedience are absolutely crucial for the Manchester Terrier. They are eager to please and quick to learn. This breed does not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods or corrective discipline. They do best with thorough firmness, fairness, consistency, persistence, respect, and patience. The Manchester Terrier excels in agility and obedience trials.
