Miniature Bull Terrier History

While most dog breeds have difficult histories, the Miniature Bull Terrier has one of the simplest: it is a descendant of the larger Bull Terrier. In the 17th century, when dog enthusiasts had more freedom to experiment with their breeding, the Bull Terrier came in all shapes and sizes. The smallest Bull Terrier is said to have weighed less than five pounds! Originally known as Coverwood terriers, these dogs tended to be sickly and a generally poor breed. This long process of specialized breeding culminated in the appearance of the Miniature Bull Terrier, which was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1939. This happened while the Mini’s population was still low, so owners had to resort to inbreeding because the dog could no longer be mixed with Bull Terriers of other classifications. Because of this, the Miniature Bull Terrier population never grew to considerable heights. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1991, and it has enjoyed low popularity ever since.

The Miniature Bull Terrier shares many common characteristics with other terrier breeds. It is feisty, bold, and adventurous, but still retains an affectionate and polite attitude indoors. This breed is independent and somewhat stubborn, so training should be filled with patience and creativity. It has an excellent sense of humor that should be encouraged, but not spoiled. Proper socialization will ensure this dog is well-behaved around other animals. If pushed into a corner, it will not hesitate to fight back. It may chase strange animals if not on a leash. In the company of strangers, it is wary but not threatening. It may not tolerate small children, though its tough body can withstand a little roughhousing. The Miniature Bull Terrier is an energetic and loving watchdog. It can thrive in a family environment if given enough exercise and attention. Regular grooming is not necessary for this shorthaired breed. Occasionally brushing and combing should be sufficient to remove any loose hair from the Miniature Bull Terrier. A wipe down with a damp washcloth should also keep this breed fairly clean. The ears should be cleaned on a regular basis, and the nails should be clipped at least once every two weeks to keep them at a manageable length. A rub down with a specially made rubber glove should suffice and take care of many, if not all grooming aspects.

The handler must be firm, consistent, and always dominant to prevent problems.
