Miniature Schnauzer Overview

Originally created as a compact version of the Schnauzer, the Mini is a smaller, but equally sturdy version. Brave and energetic, the Mini possesses the boisterous energy of a terrier without the headstrong attitude that characterizes them. 

In little need of continuous exercise to stay healthy, the breed is well adapted to life in a small home or apartment. Yet its thick fur coat is cause for high maintenance. On top of recommended daily brushings, the Schnauzer’s characteristic beard can get rather dirty if not cleaned after meals. 

Although it is banned in dog shows, casual Schnauzer owners prefer to simply clip the dog’s fur to lower the upkeep requirement.

Miniature Schnauzer History

It is said that the Miniature Schnauzer’s origins date back to 15^th century Germany, where Standard Schnauzers were bred with Poodles and Affenpinschers to attain their smaller stature. 

The breed’s original duties were to hunt down rats on farms, but its small stature permits adaptation to city life. 

The American Miniature Schnauzer Club was established in 1933, after regular breeding in 1925 led to widespread popularity.

Miniature Schnauzer Character

Miniature Schnauzers can be highly trainable if given a firm hand. They tend to dislike education, so training sessions would be more effective if performed in entertaining ways. 

The Mini is sometimes too smart for its own good, requiring creative training sessions to keep its mind stimulated, lest the dog become bored with repetition. If left to its own devices, the Mini is likely to assert itself as “King of the Castle,” bossing around children, other pets, or sometimes its master. Early socialization is the best way to avoid bossiness. 

If provided with a safe and sensible environment, the Mini will play harmoniously with children as long as it feels proper respect is given to it. If a family is willing to humor the cocky Miniature Schnauzer, then it will be an obedient, trustworthy, and respectful dog.

Miniature Schnauzer Care

The Miniature Schnauzer should be brushed regularly to prevent matting or tangling, however is fairly easy to comb through. This breed should be clipped professionally twice a year, however is not required if brushed regularly. Professional plucking is required on the coat of this breed. The coat of this breed, while it can still become tangled and/or matted, has a fairly tangle resistant coat. The Miniature Schnauzer sheds little to no hair making him ideal for a family with allergies.

Miniature Schnauzer Training

The Miniature Schnauzer is naturally well mannered and obedient, however needs training. They can be very demanding and if left alone, they can become somewhat of a tyrant. Consistency and a firm yet gentle hand is required. A variety of training methods work best with this breed. Obedience training must be started at an early age as they have the tendency to be stubborn. The Miniature Schnauzer is very eager to learn and is fairly easy to housebreak if the right techniques are used.
