Neopolitan Mastiff History

As the name implies, the Neapolitan Mastiff originated in Italy as an ancient Roman war dog. The physique we recognize today comes from centuries of interbreeding with other monstrously-sized dogs. The initial foundation of the breed comes from Macedonian war dogs, which were taken and dispersed by Alexander the Great around 300 B.C. They were used for any number of aggressive activities, like guarding homes, livestock, or fighting lions and elephants for entertainment. Adopted by the Romans in 55 B.C., they were interbred with British Mastiffs as the Roman army conquered the region. The resulting breed was massive, fierce, and unstoppable; and it became the chosen guard dog by Italian aristocratic homes for centuries. Neos were an obscure breed until 1946, when enthusiasts found it too unique to remain unknown. They petitioned and fought to have the breed recognized by the Italian Kennel Club. Shortly thereafter, the dog made its way to America alongside Italian immigrants. Popularity rose slowly, and the AKC recognized the breed in 2004. Today the Neapolitan Mastiff’s unnatural look has given it a home in American fantasy movies, recently featured in the Harry Potter films as the companion of a half-human, half-giant character.

The Neapolitan Mastiff prefers the company of its owner and no one else. It is solitary and laid back, rarely bored even lounging about the house. This is certainly not a dog to be taken to the park, because it will not bother socializing with strange dogs or people. If socialized properly, it will tolerate other pets. But this dog generally likes to be alone with its master. Gentle and friendly with children, the Neo is an ideal family dog. But its low energy and massive size may make for an unsuitable playmate. Early socialization is key for this breed, because it has a natural sense of aggression towards strangers both animal and human. Training is not the easiest thing in the world, but the Neo is so laid back, it is generally unproblematic with its behavior. The Neapolitan Mastiff is happiest lounging around the house, serving its protective purpose.
